The Stage Bottles are a great underrated experimental punk/ska/oi band from Germany who play an infectious and fun blend of musical styles that was sure to rock the house. I really don't know that much about this band except that they're anti-fascist and they bring enough energy to tear off your face!

Since their formation, the Zydepunks have been one of New Orleans’ most rousing live performers. Their energetic arrangements will get you moving whether you’re at a bar or a Celtic festival. On their new album, Exile Waltz, the Zydepunks deliver their most rambunctious collection of songs yet. The rhythm section anchors their punk style, while the accordion, fiddle, and Juan Christian Kuffner’s hyper Afro-French vocals give them an authentic Zydeco feel. “Boudreaux Crosses the Danube” starts off with a winding melody straight from a jack-in-the-box, and then explodes into an lightning-fast variation on and Irish jig. Shortly after the halfway point, the song breaks down into a hypnotic waltz, but soon regains its frisky tempo. A seductive little number that recalls old Parisian nights unravles into a rapid-fire accordion assault on “Andropov/Polka Felix”.

It's almost October, and this is my choice for album of the year!

I've been waiting to hear this album for years. Even before I'd ever heard the album, or even heard of The Zydepunks, I've been wanting to hear Cajun-punk. I remember discussing the idea of starting a Cajun-flavored punk band with a few friends years ago as a joke, it sounded like a great idea. Too bad none of us had any clue about Cajun music, Zydeco music, or anything remotely close. We figured there were probably a few bands in Nawlins already doing it, and our discussion altered into who was buying the next round.

A couple of years later at a BBQ, I heard a Zydepunks song and got so excited, I attempted a drunken back flip, and landed on my head. lying upside down between the bushes, grass, a fence, and dog shit, at the edge of my buddies yard, I screamed "FUCK YEAH!" It was so original, fresh, and exciting. A totally new sound. I couldn't get enough. (True story!)

The Zydepunks like to call their flavor of music: Bayou Gypsy Punk. It's a combination of: New Orleans Cajun-Irish-Breton-Klezmer-Slavic-Zydeco, and let me tell you, since the BBQ, I've been listening to it non-stop. If the combination of genres isn't enough for you, maybe the combination of languages will wet your whistle. The Zydepunks sing in English, French, German, Spanish, Yiddish, and Portuguese. The album "And The Streets Will Flow With Whiskey" is all over the place. The placement of the songs seriously reminded me of listening to The Pogues album "If I Should Fall From Grace With God" for the first time. The songs are all over the place. You'll be smiling from ear to ear with an irresistible urge to dive nose first into a bowl of gumbo. (Maybe that's just me.) It's an album you'll play in it's entirety, you won't want to skip a track. After a description like that, what more needs to be said? A whole helluvalot.

I'm sure what happened to New Orleans, and the Gulf Coast is still in your thoughts. I'd like to happily mention that even if the members of The Zydepunks are temporarily scattered across the globe. (From North Carolina to Austria) Not even a fucking hurricane (Or two) will stop them, or their music. They'll be playing a Halloween show in Memphis, so make sure you support them when they come through your town. Even their CD's have been saved from the storm. So make sure you pick one up if you're lucky enough to see them live, or if you live too far away, you can order it from their website: http://www.zydepunks.com/store.php So, if you're looking to hear something somewhat similar to Celt-Punk, but with a spicy Cajun twist, I suggest picking up a copy right now, play it at a backyard BBQ, and keep an eye out for the village idiot attempting a back flip into the bushes.

Caustic Christ - Can't Relate (2003)

Swampchode got me on a Pallbearer's kick and somehow it made me run across this band again which I haven't heard in years. Crazy, crusty punk recommended to anybody that's looking to catch a case of whiplash...


"You should know the drill by now, expect lots of fast hardcore/punk (but not too fast) with shouted vocals and fucking slick bass runs that fly all over the place rather than copying the guitars. Most of the songs hover right around a minute each and they just shred straight through without fucking around. These cats were never particularly sloppy, but I must say that the new tracks are tighter than ever, so the performances are really fucking dead on. There's definitely more of an emphasis on the punk influences this time out, it's still thick, but it's not what I would classify as necessarily heavy, and the slightly chaotic aspects have become more controlled and refined, which really fits the delivery a lot better. "Frat Boy", for example, has a slightly "catchier" structure with some gang backup vocals and such, but there are still a few tracks with that driving sort of heavier crust thing happening, namely "Immaculate Deception". Then they close the LP with a great cover of Flipper's "Ha, Ha, Ha". I love the recording. It's thick and natural with a suitable mix that gives everything its own space. It's certainly not polished, but it's not overly raw or anything like that at all. It's a lot clearer and more well rounded than the EP's, that's for sure. The layout is all in black and white with a little bit of green, and the artwork is incredible. There are tons of awesome illustrations, and I love the way the booklet is set up. All of the covers from the 7" releases are included, and the lyrics are presented straight off of the EP layouts as well, which works out great. Most of the lyrics are personal and just deal with base level frustrations and stuff, but then out of nowhere there's a scathing political attack like "Satisfied Means Pacified": "The vote is nothing more than a scam, Like war, taxes, and justice and the freedom of your 'fellow man', So wave the flag and praise the lord, Demand your given voice, Pull the lever, drop the ballot, and believe that you've made a choice." Good stuff. The new songs are the band's best yet in my opinion, so definitely pick this up if you enjoyed any of the previous 7" releases. (7/10)" ~ Aversiononline.com

Coming back after 13+ years since the live album release to record this CD is a feat in itself. It is another to come back with an outstanding, absolutely polished, powerful set of 11 songs that basically picks up their artistic progression from the "3V" days. Each song brings back the best of the best qualities that the band has displayed for over 25 years now. Better yet, between the obvious growing maturity the band has continued to possess to date, the catchy, energetic melodic power rock song craft they are famous for, the overall crisp musicianship and pristine digital technology sound recording of today's studio work on the CD, the long awaited "IV" is simply hailed as complete. Randy's vocals never sounded so clean with plenty of his enjoyable range. His guitar and keyboard playing are again flawless. Felix is superb on his bass and vocal contributions and Guy, who has been knocked by critics in the past for "over-drumming" is straight-forward with simplified Bonham-like thunderous and defined drum command to carry the trio home with a winner. The CD blasts off with seven superb power tracks in the Zebra style. A little twist that is a first for Zebra is mastered on track #8, "Waiting To Die", as in the mix is a very cool sax interlude throughout. I thought my friends were joking when back at the end of '02, one of them said "Dude, Zebra is putting out a new album." Not long after those words were said, they booked a show here in New Orleans so of course I went check them out.  That's when it had been confirmed that they were releasing something new,  They even played a few songs that would later make it on to the album.  It was pretty intense to say the least.  Whether you are a long time fan, or just stumbling across them now, do yourself a favor and check this out.
