Fuck On The Beach - Endless Summer (2001)

I had no idea what to expect from this band until I actually played this cd and damn, it's good! Killer thrash/power violence with completely bat-shit screamed vocals. Imagine if Pig Destroyer, Melt Banana, Spazz and The Locusts all fucked on the beach and had an angry, angry baby. That's this...

"Fuck on the Beach (AKA FxOxB) is a power violence/thrashcore band from Tokyo, Japan. They have released several records on the influential hardcore punk record label Slap-A-Ham Records run by Spazz vocalist/bassist Chris Dodge.

In 1999 the band played at Fiesta Grande, a power violence music festival put on by Slap-A-Ham Records, at 924 Gilman as part of their US Tour. This concert was recorded and released on CD as Power Violence Forever US Tour 1999.

Although the band's first language is Japanese, the lyrics and titles of their songs are in English. This often results in examples of Engrish such as the songs "I Cannot Stop Fall in Love" or "Never No Skin Fuck" from their Power Violence Forever CD" ~ Wiki

How about some Sunday morning country jams??

Dale Watson isn't one to uphold the music industry's status quo. He's moving forward on his own terms and true to his own convictions. Even with frequent proclamations declaring him one of country music's last authentic voices (like that in Crazy Again--a recent documentary on Watson's life--when a fan declares, "son, you play country like country was when country was country"), Watson is done with the "C" word and what it's come to represent in modern times. So much so that he's created his own genre, simply called Ameripolitan. In a recent posting on his website (www.dalewatson.com), Dale explains it like this: "I've been trying to come up with a name the best describes this music that me and folks similar do. When folks ask, I hesitate, down right embarrassed really, to say country. I didn't used to be that way, but with the change in country, the term doesn't mean the same as it used to. If you say traditional, or old, or western swing most folks think 'retro' and dismiss it without hearing it. I wanted a name that didn't say country anything and didn't give anyone a preconceived idea. I came up with Ameripolitan. I even put it in Wikipedia defined as: Original music with 'prominent' roots influence." And so it goes with Dale Watson, the kind of unparalleled iconoclast that's far too rare in music today. - taken from Myspace

While I'm still recovering from having my face ripped off Thursday night @ the Pentagram/EHG show, I've been listening to a good bit of stuff from this guy right here.  This one is Dale's first release for Hightone Records and I'd have to say it is essential for anyone who is a fan of alt/outlaw country music.  I've been so busy lately with the real world that I haven't taken the time to re-encode many of these at 320kbps but I will over the next few days.  I still have video's to edit and all that so sit back, turn your speakers up, and bear with me people.   This and a few other of Dale's albums are coming with me today while I paint the house.

Deadfood - Demo (2000)

Demo - 2000

Genre - Jazzy, Noise, Grind ????
Origin - Los Angeles, Ca.

Time - 11:49 min.
File - 22.99 MB (320 kbps)

The key word for "weird feelings" can be "smirking" - they are based on quite serious musical cliches that are taunted with all the power of imagination agitated by mushrooms. The result they get is to be made absurd, mixed here and there with different properties and trumpery such as, degenerate vocals, acid-synthesised grunting, sounds of traditional Chukchi-Nenetsk autonomous region and etc. And such kind of miraculous stuff changes one another at the speed high enough not to be able to catch their succession. And that is what makes the album the one to listen to and the one that can't be classified. That's where the compound words like "weird-neo-noise-grind-jazz" come from to define the things that deadfood creates. Although even these words wouldn't characterize the unruly music. (taken from Sound Delirium)

Track List:
1. Colostomy Grab Bag
2. Eximo
3. Haircoup

Here is Deadfood's 3 song demo from 2000. They were a band from Southern California that featured Kevin Fetus from the bands Watch Me Burn (previous post), Fetus Eaters and Cattle Decapitation (briefly). Deadfoods music is all over the map and really hard to tag if labels are your thing.

Kevin also runs a label called Vomitcore Records that puts out most of his bands releases. The review above is from their 2001 self released full length "Weird Feelings" in which these three songs appear. Info on Deadfood is minimal but here's an interview from 2002 here and here. Check it out!

Damn Laser Vampires - Gotham Beggars Syndicate (2008)

"If Quentin Tarantino were to make a film based on a Bram Stroker novel, Damn Laser Vampires US debut Gotham Beggars Syndicate would be the soundtrack.

Damn Laser Vampires is a post-punk trio that brings elements such as polka, psychobilly, and new wave into a strange ground filled with high energy performances, menacing vocals, and an otherworldly ability to mystify and entertain. Traditional punk receives a dose of Transylvanian attitude as Damn Laser Vampires yell, scream, and howl through songs of God, The Devil, sex, drugs, alcohol, and self-doubt.

Ronaldo Selistre wails, growls, and snarls through the 13 track punk-psychobilly mayhem that is Gotham Beggars Syndicate . Selistre s vocals simultaneously entice and petrify, leaving the question of whether the sounds of this groaning Brazilian are those of pain, pleasure, or murder. Selistre, along with Francis K, provide the guitar work for the album: a dual layered sound of dark undertones and punk-blues riffs. Backed by Michael Munhoz providing roots meets punk driven sounds on percussion, Selistre and Francis K. provide the guitar sounds of a punk rock cabaret of all things macabre: as if The Hives were cross-bred with Nick Cave.

Born in 2005 in the cold Porto Alegre city, south of Brazil, they made their debut with the independent EP The Devil Is a Preacher , which immediately caught the attention of alternative media and brought a new color to the local underground musical scene. In their first two years of life, the southern Vampires have printed a trademark on the Brazilian alternative universe. They ve traveled through the country, playing in bars, halls, and festivals including Goiania Noise ( Brazil s main indie festival); jumped to the pages of the Brazilian Rolling Stone magazine; and put four tracks in the soundtrack of the new Gustavo Spolidoro film Ainda Orangotangos ( Still Orangutans ) which recently completed its successful participation in international cinema festivals in the Netherlands and Canada .

April brings the United States debut of Damn Laser Vampires with Gotham Beggars Syndicate . Thirteen songs of hard hitting sounds that will make all take notice. Songs such as Saint of Killers and The Devil is a Preacher demonstrate storytelling not traditionally found in the punk sound. Graveyard Polka brings the sound of an accordion to a new demonic low. Alongside these tracks traditional new wave influenced punk shines at its best with songs such as Sprawl , M.I. , and Bracadabro .

Watch Me Burn - Demo (2001)

Demo 2001

Genre - Thrash/Grind
Origin - Los Angeles, Ca.
Time - 6:14 min.
File - 9.94 MB (320kbps)

Conceived by screamer SAWA, guitar player Kevin Fetus, drummer Rusty Reens and bass player Russ Herpich, as a dirty/sludgy/grind/thrash with a hint of psychedelic ambience. WATCH ME BURN set out to raise the bar of what was deemed as "extreme music".

"We wrote songs we wanted to hear, stuff that had enormous weight, coupled with a punch to the throat, and the thrill of floating in a vat of psilocybin", says guitar player Kevin.

In mid 2001 WATCH ME BURN recorded a 3 song CD that was not only praised around the world by the metal community, and brought the quartet some early label attention, but the band declined, as they felt they had some more dues to pay. The band began a lengthily campaign, passing out the 3 song CD"s to anyone who would listen, 3000 copies later the work had paid off. WATCH ME BURN was gaining attention, playing with several of underground metal's heavy weights, Pig Destroyer, Phobia, Cattle Decapitation, Exhumed, and Uphill Battle. It wasn't long until WATCH ME BURN was doing sold out shows in their home town.

In the fall of 2002 a full length had been recorded for L.A. based Vomitcore Records, WATCH ME BURN began the campaign again, sending out the self titled CD's to every zine and Radio station they could find. This brought the attention from Rhapsodeath Productions to co-release a split CD with Malaysia's Spermblast. 500 copies were pressed which quickly sold out, and were just as soon repressed. Later that year, WATCH ME BURN began demoing new material which found it's way onto a split 7" with release with nosiecore/power violence pioneers Godstomper.

In mid 2003, WATCH ME BURN set out on a West Coast Tour that took them from San Diego to Vancouver B.C. for a sold out show with gore hounds Exhumed and doom messiahs Goatsblood. The writing continued, the song structures got weirder, the intensity was building, and the fan base was growing.

In Late 2004 WATCH ME BURN was asked to perform on the infamous KXLU - L.A. radio's best station, some of these songs were then released as live split 7"with fellow Vomitcore label mates Fetus Eaters...this release furthered their onslaught in the metal underground. WMB were then asked to fill in on a few West Coast dates for the Vital Remains, Black Dahlia Murder, Cattle Decapitation tour. The band was well received, and was stoked to be playing for bigger audiences.

The band continued writing new material which they began recording in late 2005 and finished up in late 2006. The new songs are stronger, some have a completely new approach in regards to tuning, bringing out hidden melodies that help the bands already expanding universe of Vomitcore. There will be elements of doom, crust, thrash, grind and the intermittent burst of "funk", all the things that help make WATCH ME BURN a staple in the Vomitcore scene.

Negative Reaction give any band in the sludge/doom scene a kick in the ass. One of the heaviest bands around today, NR uses feedback as a hammer and the guitars tuned to A as the stake. Don't be alarmed though, this band writes songs with feeling and heart to match creativity and give the listener one hell of a time. They can tear through a fast number as well as a slow one, which will make you think you're listening to a combination of Grief, Black Sabbath and Napalm Death. Negative Reaction released their first seven inch in 1993 and are still going strong. Discover the heaviest band, the Gods of Sludge...NEGATIVE REACTION!

Galactic - Ruckus (2003)

Excellent funk/jazz/experimental band from NOLA with Stanton Moore (Corrosion Of Confomity) on drums. This shit's great for just kicking back, smoking and chilling...

"On their fourth studio album proper -- Vintage Reserve was a best-of, and We Love 'Em Tonight was a live offering -- Galactic wholeheartedly move not so much away from their past as a bad-ass New Orleans jazz & roll concern, as they move toward another of its traditions: Voodoo funk. There is a twist though. Not merely content to grasp the Mardi Gras Indians or Dr. John esthetics, Galactic points firmly toward the technological present with their primordial groove machine music. Drummer Stanton Moore uses as many loops as he does organic drums, bass, bass, and more bass is the order of the day, and strange keyboard sounds come bubbling under like some lost Lee Perry session gone digital. Does that make this a techno or an electronica record? C'mon. Ruckus is a spooky ride to the other side of midnight. The party is either gonna break out or break up; it exists on the edge of that fine distinction, that moment in time when anything is possible. And possibility is what Ruckus is all about: simmering organ grooves encounter striated acoustic and electric guitars under a series of syncopated rhythms by Moore on "Bongo Joe." Jagged synth lines by Richard Vogel meet ragged-then-overdriven guitars from Jeffrey Raines on "The Moil," and monstrous tom tom loops collide with basslines and keyboard riffs before Raines comes in on the acoustic bottleneck to smooth out the off-kilter funk on "Kid Kenner." This is music as the deconstruction of a sonic palette, as the deconstruction, death, and rebirth of a band. And, like Medeski, Martin and Wood before them, Galactic is all the better for its brave new world direction. Ruckus is no less a roots album than Coolin' Off was. But perhaps it is more so because in order to use all this gear and create the kind of ass-burning grooves the band comes up with, there is only one place to go to find the source: rhythm itself (if you need further evidence check out "The Beast," and let it mess your head and backbone up). Highly recommended. ~ Thom Jurek

Recorded at Ready Mix Studios, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Bodies Lay Broken - Eximinous Execration of Exiguous Exequies

"Bodies Lay Broken is blisteringly brutal, blitzkrieg-style old school goregrind. It’s just non-stop grinding, gurgling vocals and screeches, and machine gun fire blastbeats. And it’s fucking awesome. Yeah, these guys are just treading down the street that Carcass and Co. paved back in the early 90’s and late 80’s, but fuck if it ain’t great. Songs like "Ectopic Dropsy and Debridement" remind you of everything you loved about Carcass, and none of the boring, contrived shit released by the thousands upon thousands of clones they spawned. Honest to God, if the melodic death phase never happened to Carcass, this is exactly the direction I would have wanted them to go in: blisteringly fast, unrelentingly brutal grindcore. Ignore their strange fascination with the Japanese though; yes, I too have no idea what the Asian men are saying in these sound samples (though I suspect the opener to "Importunate Harrying Malactic Clyster" is from a rather famous piano-wire-meets-foot scene from Takashi Miike’s Audition, but fuck I don’t feel like checking it). There is no reason any self-respecting grindcore or goregrind fan does not have Bodies Lay Broken’s full length. If you value the pummeling traditional of the gore-soaked Carcass, you owe it to yourself to pick up Eximinious Execration of Exiguous Exequies." ~ Teufelstomb.com

Fall Of The Bastards - Dusk Of An Ancient Age (2004)

Dusk Of An Ancient Age (2004)

Genre - Black Metal/Death Metal
Origin - Portland, Oregon
Time - 48:34 min.
File - 97.58 MB (320kbps)

With "Dusk of an Ancient Age" Portland, Oregon’s Fall of the Bastards concocts an interesting hybrid of shrill Black Metal violence, throaty Death Metal pummel, and clear, sharp NWOBHM/NWOSDM melody. The results are a powerful and compelling mixture displaying the far-reaching effects and influence of Black Metal on young, up-and-coming American musicians.

While Dusk of an Ancient Age’s overall tone is far distant from “pure” or “rulebook” Black Metal, its marriage of trebly, repetetive riffing to muscular lead guitar work is enthusiastic and authentic enough to silence those who might accuse FOTB of stealing Black Metal’s grim birthright, and of diluting its savage maelstrom. It is genuinely refreshing to hear a young American band splice together Scandinavian Black Metal influences with a strong At The Gates sense of melody, while avoiding the pitfall of merely “aping” the sounds. Purists be warned, there is as much Death Metal (and occassional glimpses of Hardcore) lurking within the folds of Dusk of an Ancient Age. The delivery of vocalist Jason alternates between a shrieked rasp not dissimilar from Marduk to guttural chest-bursting bellows that could messily bore into any Goregrind record.

Interesting things are rustling in the Northwestern corner of the USA, and Fall of The Bastards are only one of the leathery musical serpents to crack a scaled eyelid in that rainy clime. Following the lead of the criminally underheard Teenage Cthulu, and contemporary with Olympia, Washington’s Wolves In the Throne Room, Fall of the Bastards further convolute a sometime Black Metal tradition in their interest in active and distant touring. This DIY approach will hopefully ensure a wide audience for this interesting band. The well-designed cd version of Dusk of an Ancient Age offers four live tracks, which, if indicative of Fall of the Bastard’s live sound, show that FOTB live are raw and energetic performers who are, if anything, even more triumphantly punishing without a recording studio’s polish. (a review taken from their myspace page)

Track List:
1. In The Midst Of Obsolete
2. Intrinsical Lost
3. Put To Death II
4. Signs Of Impending Apocalypse
5. Angelrot
6. Otherwise Blank Expression
7. Idiocy Parade
8. Dawn ( The Mourning After)
Bonus live Tracks 2/1/03
9. Where Dead Hang From Trees
10. Put To Death I
11. Otherwise Blank Expression
12. Wanderers Of A Deserted Plain

Fall Of The Bastards managed to put out a couple of splits, one with Wormwood and one with Book Of The Black Earth and two full lengths Where Dead Hang From Trees (2003) and this before calling it quits. This was released on Intollerant Messiah, the now defunct label from San Mateo, Ca. that was run by Lord Balsakk from the Agents Of Satan. I really liked this band I would say equal parts Death, Black metal and Crust. Since disbanding the members have moved on to form or join other kickass musical projects such as Splatterhouse, Oakhelm, L'Acephale and D'Gul, hit their page up by going here and check out what they are creating now days.

Dissection - The Somberlain (Reissue 2006 w/ bonus tracks)

Forgot all about this one til recently getting reacquainted with it. Classic!!! Totally still rides above most BM nowadays, far as I'm concerned, and should be mandatory listening for every black/death fan. Originally released in 1993...

"The Somberlain is the debut album from the highly influential blackened death metal band, Dissection. In the midst of all the second wave of black metal bands and melodic death metal bands, these guys stepped out and created what no other band had done at that time; bridging the gap between black metal and death metal and throwing in some melody. This was the key that brought these Swedish pioneers to the forefront of the underground metal scene.

The complexity of the music, the distinguishable melodies, and the haunting vocals of Jon Nödtveidt on The Somberlain are what set this band apart from every other blackened death metal band. Even in today's metal scene, with the countless amounts of bands doing the same style.

Another element with this album is the atmospheric presence. To me this means that when listening to the songs on the album you are just entranced and don't want to do anything other than sit back and enjoy what is coming out of your speakers. It just leaves you in a state of euphoria and makes you dumbfounded as to how a group of guys could produce such a masterful album that not even the likes of god could duplicate.

So if you are looking for an album that has a mixture of acoustic passages, black metal, death metal, melody and a haunting atmosphere then I highly suggest this album." ~ Metalstorm.net

Strawfoot - How We Prospered (2009)

2009 - How We Prospered

Strawfoot is a six piece alternative country/Gothic Americana band from St. Louis, Missouri. The name is taken from the Civil War era march cadence of the same name. Their music infuses a variety of influences ranging from bluegrass, southern gospel and the blues, to eastern European folk and alternative rock. Steeped in the rich, dark history of America and beyond Strawfoot play haunting cautionary tales of outlaw scarecrows, wayward preachers, falling pianos and the devil to create the dark sounds of “Candy-Coated Salvation and Eternal Damnation”.

Fronted by the Reverend Marcus, a distant relative of famous author Mark Twain, Strawfoot performs with violin, banjo, harmonica, upright bass, guitar, mandolin, percussion and the occasional accordion. Their high-energy shows regularly include burlesque dancers and a tongue-in-cheek absolution of the audience’s sins.

A part of the burgeoning Gothic Americana scene gaining popularity both in the US and abroad, Strawfoot has performed with Th' Legendary Shack Shakers, The Ditty Bops, Curtis Eller, The Meat Purveyors, Reverend Glasseye, HUMANWINE, Of Montreal, Bobby Bare, Jr., Jason Ringenberg, the Black Diamond Heavies, the Monads, The Redwalls, Tim Barry, The Hackensaw Boys and William Elliott Whitmore among others.

Here's one of my favorite releases of 2009, I've seen it posted up on many other blogs but they were all in 192kbps. This one was ripped by me.  Yes, I purchased the album and re-encoded it all to 320kbps.  I hope all of you enjoy it.  These guys are amazing. I really look forward to them making a pass through the South.  Hopefully a New Orleans/Baton Rouge date will happen in the not so distant future.    Devildowninga and Mr. T should love this, if they haven't heard it already.  As some of you may know, I've been super busy with work and renovating a house for the family so I've been slacking with the posts as of late.  So I'd like to give a big thanks to the Krewe for keeping up with the blog, picking up my slack and posting such good stuff.   Thanks dudes!

Pig Destroyer/Gnob split - (1999)

Pig Destroyer/Gnob split

Genre - Grind/Comedic Thrash
Origin - Virginia
Time - 21:54 min.
File - 43.29 MB (320kbps)

This Robodog split CD features two extreme bands, Pig Destroyer and Gnob. Pig Destroyer is the more notable of the two, especially considering their recent signing to Relapse Records. Both bands deliver aggressive music, although their approaches are vastly different.

The first nine tracks of this sixteen track release are courtesy of Pig Destroyer, a grindcore band from Virgina. These guys are heavy. There's just no other way to describe them. Their pulsating metal and grindcore grooves are relentless, and almost scary. The vocals consist entirely of yells and screams, with an occasional death metal growl here and there. The band is definitely tight, and while they're prone to super fast machine-gun bursts of metal, they often slow down to pound out some blistering thrash metal. Pig Destroyer's nine tracks include a cover of The Stooges' "Down In The Street". Really, there's nothing boring about this 3-piece, and the fact that they don't have a bassist doesn't make them any less devastating.

We must admit that we don't know a thing about Gnob. We think they're from Virginia. Their music really has nothing in common with Pig Destroyer, expect that in the most general use of the term, you could call their offerings "metal". Gnob (bong backwards?) are difficult to figure out. Their songs are more comedic than anything, and they're certainly not a "tight" band. Thrash-comedy-rock-fuzz might be an appropriate description of Gnob. Then again, what the heck does that mean? The band even goes so far as to cover portions of the Mary Poppins soundtrack on "Merry Popskins". Strange stuff. -- (taken from Lambgoat)

Track List:
Pig Destroyer
1. Blond Prostitute
2. Patterns Of Failure
3. Rejection Fetish
4. Dark Satelites

5. Purity Undone
6. Forgotten Child
7. White Sand
8. Painter Of Dead Girls
9. Down In The Street (The Stooges)
Gnob
10. Shallmar Bor
11. The Gnobstosity
12. Graveyard Of Roaches
13. My Beard = Testosterone (American Werewolf In Hampton)
14. Merry Popskins
15. Hardline Headache
16. Running In Place

The Pig Destroyer tracks showed up a year later as a 7" picture disc released by Reptillian Records titled "Painter Of Dead Girls". Information on Gnob can be obtained by clicking here. Enjoy!

The Index - Unmade (2002)

Unmade (2002)

Genre - Grind/Thrash
Origin - Sterling, Va.
Time - 12:41 min.
File - 25.27 MB (320kbps)

Track List:
1. Megan
2. Ride Fast

3. Transmission
4. Lost
5. Circle Of You

The Index mix elements of new school hardcore with pulverizing grind blasts. Most appreciated are the absolutely throat destroying female vocals by The Index's screamer Elysia, who sounds like a cross between Blaine from The Accused and Schmeir from Destruction. The band also features two ex members of Enemy Soil, Richard and Mason.

The Index put out a s/t full length back in 2000' on a label called Displacer Beast. This 5 track disc was put out on Brick In The Face Anesthesia Recordings, a label that I think was run by one of the members of the band. The liner notes says it was recorded by Mark, one of the guitarist's in 2002 and it was released after the s/t full length.

I got this disc from a gig at 924 Gilman St. in Berkeley (around that time) from a couple of smokin hot punk chicks that were walking through the crowd handing out a stack of CD's! I remember getting this, a Watch Them Burn disc and a disc by a band called DeadFood. I should dig them out and post them sometime. Let me know what you think by leaving a comment.....haha, yeah right!

The Pleasure Barons - Live In Las Vegas (1993)

Led by the late, great, Country Dick Montana and featuring the Reverend Mojo Nixon and the incomparable Dave Alvin, the Pleasure Barons laid waste to rock and roll convention. Call it cow punk, psycho-billy, or pure mayhem, this CD is a monument to what makes rock great. It will never happen again.

The greatest supergroup never to be seen again. Perfect mix of drunken pyschos doing fantastic music that would make the clowns at The Rock and Roll Hall of Lame quake in their booties.

"Blasters guitarist Dave Alvin spent the early '90s touring with the Pleasure Barons, featuring Mojo Nixon and Beat Farmers drummer/singer Country Dick Montana. Their rowdy stage show was chronicled on a 1993 concert album that didn't include the following encounter with an audience member.

Some guy in the audience in Isla Vista was heckling me nonstop," Alvin told the Reader, "and Mojo...jumped off the stage, grabbed the loudmouth, threw him to the floor, and dry-humped him into submission while the audience cheered. The poor heckler -- after Mojo was finished punishing him -- ran out the front door and probably never heckled anyone again. When Mojo jumped back onstage, Country Dick said, 'Good job, Mojo. Please come by my room later.'"

Mojo Nixon, Country Dick Montana, and Dave Alvin's Pleasure Barons are described at Wikipedia.org as "a Las Vegas revue from acts who aren't going to be asked to play Vegas." A live album was released of a second Pleasure Barons tour in 1993." ~ Sandiegoreader.com

Woe - A Spell For The Death Of Man (2008)

Genre: DSBM, USBM
Origin: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Time:  43:15

2008 - A Spell For the Death of Man

Woe, the now critically acclaimed one-man black metal project from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania based Chris Grigg, has hit home with its first powerful, unrelenting, and surprisingly unique offering on Stronghold Records.  In addition, Stronghold Records, too, is a very new face to the black metal scene, this being only the fourth release in the label's catalogue, and truthfully, perhaps one of the most important black metal releases out today.  In all sincerity, Woe is offering a lot more for the listener than the typical bullshit that we've all come to expect.  Chris has taken the same raw edge and made it personal.  He's not followed a path, copied a progression, or allowed his influences to write the music for him.  This is black metal from the soul, if such a pair can co-exist in all actuality (and indeed may even insult the artist as there are satanic themes to be found in the ritualistic style performed.)

Woe was born in 2007, long after the demise of USBM undergrounders Algol (whom released a split with the well-known face around here, Rory Heikkila, who was performing under the moniker Shroud of Despondency at the time.)  The first offering to the world under Woe came as a split DIY CD self-release with the crusty black thrashers from Philly, Infernal Stronghold.  Limited to 424 copies in four different versions (color-schemed), there weren't many people that were lucky enough to hear the one track that Woe had to offer with Ritual XIV, but those who did manage to grab a copy or who heard the band via myspace had been eagerly awaiting this debut release from this talented musician, and here we are with it finally in our grasps.

As mentioned, this is one of the most important works for black metal in America in the present.  Though the scene in general is breaking free of its mold, the stagnation that has gripped this country's blackened sense of music for some time now, very few are trying to take the music to an entirely new level spiritually and personally.  Woe's “A Spell for the Death of Man” is NOT your typical misanthropic black metal album.  This is a beautiful, moving piece of ferocious aggression.  If walls could be painted with blood in the majestic grandeur that is only seen in our dreams, this would no doubt be the soundtrack.  Movements throughout the album aren't limited by the confines of the black metal genre.  With epic harmonious guitar orchestrations, bound endlessly to post-rock / post-metal atmospheres through laid-back drumming and strummed guitar lines instead of never-ending tremolo picking (though these take up a great deal of the album and DO add so much to the fury bound within), A Spell for the Death of Mankind is nearly intoxicating for those who can really throw their hearts into this music.  There are, indeed, those out there who know what I'm talking about.  Black metal like this is like a drug.  A place where we can finally breathe and fill our lungs with comfort, a place we can't find in the complex normal world of today.

And as you read this, it should come to mind that there isn't much more that I can say as a journalist to push you towards this incredible release.  If there's one album that you buy in the first half of '09 for what little money people seem to be able to pull together today in this economy, then this is that album for the black metal fans out there.  A Spell for the Death of Man is bleak and depressive, but it shines with the radiance of a million full moons.  People, this is what we've been waiting for, the new USBM. - review by Sage @ Heathen Harvest

1. Solitude
2. Alone with our Failures

Enemy Soil - The Ruins Of Eden (1997)

The Ruins Of Eden (1997)

Genre - Grind
Origin - Virginia
Time - 22:09 min.
File - 44.79 MB (320kbps)

Enemy Soil was a grindcore band from Virginia, USA formed by Richard Johnson, R. Mason & Vaughn that existed through most of the 1990s. Their lyrics are mostly about sociopolitical subjects with a few covering the "darker side" of personal relationships.

Enemy Soil had one album, "The Ruins of Eden" pressed on vinyl by Insolito Records and on CD by Clean Plate Records and a mini-album, "Fractured Theology" issued by Profane Existence FE. The rest of the band’s releases were EPs, split EPs, and compilation appearances. Some of the bands Enemy Soil put out splits with included Agoraphobic Nosebleed, pg.99, Wadge, Reversal Of Man and Corrupted.

Two of the guys that were in Enemy Soil went on to Pig Destroyer (JR & Brian). Other bands that have ex-Enemy Soil members include Drugs Of Faith (Richard Johnson), Blower (R.Mason/Richard Johnson), Exploding Meth Lab (R. Mason, Vaughn), Autoerotichrist (R.Mason), City of Caterpillar (Jeff Kane), Index (Richard Johnson, R. Mason), Verse En Coma (Jeff Kane), Battletorn (Omid), and Last Black Chapter (R. Mason). Also, the original bassist from Pg.99 was in the band on vocals for a time. (taken from LastFM)

Top notch grindcore out of Virginia! This is the CD version Clean Plate Records put out that includes the "Live at Fiesta Grande #5" flexi. "The Ruins Of Eden" was originally released as a 10" on the German label Insolito Records also in 97'.

Enemy Soil started out as a drum machine grind band and then added a real drummer not long before they headed out to the West Coast to play Fiesta Grande #5 fest. put on by Slap A Ham Records. The band called it quits in the spring of 99' and members went on to form or join other powerhouse units mentioned above.

Not alot of information floating around about Enemy Soil, you can go here and see their out put. I was a big fan of this band and have a good deal of their records except for the split 7" w/Wadge, live in Virginia 7", a few split tapes and the double disc discography titled "Smashes The State!" that Bones Brigade Records put out not long ago. This is killer grindcore!

Strong Intention - Each Day Lived...An Act Of Defiance (2000)

On tour next month with Eyehategod. Check 'em out!!

"Formed in 1993, STRONG INTENTION continues to deliver brutal hardcore fueled by extreme speed, heaviness, and disgust. The band's earliest incarnation found itself heavily Influenced by classic NYHC outfits such as AGNOSTIC FRONT, BREAKDOWN, and the CRO-MAGS, and released the What's At Stake demo in 1993. These early recordings aligned the band with ultra-tough heavy hardcore represented in Maryland by NEXT STEP UP and GUT INSTINCT. But by 1995, issues of focus took their toll on the lineup, leaving then-guitarist Zac as the only original member, and putting the band into a year-long hiatus. In 1996, the band re-formed around a new core lineup, and the new members brought a new, diverse range of ideas and influences to the band. Gradually writing faster and faster material, the band released a debut 7" EP in 1996 on Crucial Blast. This EP was a minor departure from the earlier heavy NYHC hardcore the band had been known for; as the newer material was much faster and moved Zac over to lead vocals. After the EP was released, STRONG INTENTION continued to go through a myriad of lineup changes throughout the 90's; yet managed to tour the US and Canada 5 times.

Through all of this, the band's sound has continued to shift more and more towards the harshest ends of the underground extreme hardcore / metal spectrum, as well as cultivate a thoroughly apocalyptic worldview.

Recent actions have included the May 2002 STRONG INTENTION / CRIPPLE BASTARDS East Coast tour, the release of the band's latest recording, a 14 song CD entitled Extermination Vision, released on the European label COALITION RECORDS, and a BRAND NEW split EP with Germany's Y. Over the past 2 years, the band has also released their debut LP/CD, What Else Can We Do..., as well as the 10 song 7" EP Each Day Lived An Act Of Defiance on California label SIX WEEKS.

Strong Intention also completed a May 2004 East Coast tour with PHOBIA and ROTTEN SOUND (Finalnd) and just completed a 40day US summer tour with crossover legends D.R.I.

2005 saw more touring from S.I. , including 2 US tours and about 75 shows for the year.

In 2006 the band did a Feb/March US tour with NEURAXIS (Prosthetic), which included west coast dates with IMPALED and DISFEAR and marked the bands first show ever in MEXICO. The band followed up that tour with an east coast/midwest tour with DISFEAR,MISERY INDEX, PHOBIA and 9 SHOCKS TERROR. It was definitely a career high point as far as touring goes.

Once the tour was completed the band went into the studio with STEVE AUSTIN (TODAY IS THE DAY) and worked on the follow up to Extermination Vision. 18 songs were recorded and 2010 will finally see the release of the new cd.........FREEDOM IS SLAVERY !!" ~ Band's Myspace

This was released on a short lived Finnish label called Tylyt Levyt.

More on Cause For Effect can be found here and here. Utter Bastard was the reason I picked this lil'slab up in the first place. I picked up their debut ep when it came out back in 96' and have been a fan since. I have the majority of their out put except for the 2002 split w/ Irritate and the new split I just seen on their page here . Deep Turtle - There's a Vomitsprinkler in My Liverriver (1994)

1994 - There's A Vomitsprinkler In My Liverriver

Formed in 1990, Deep Turtle was a product of the burgeoning underground music culture of the city of Pori, Finland. Deep Turtle's music fused the energy of hardcore punk, the harmonies of jazz, latin rhythms, and the experimentalism of progressive rock into a style, which was sometimes dubbed jazzcore  or weirdcore by listeners and reviewers. Signature elements of the band's music were an abundance of uncommon time signatures; frantic and abrupt mood changes between soft jazz tones and blistering punk  assault; nimble bass guitar work providing a counterpoint  to the guitar  attack; and often indecipherable lyrics delivered both in Spanish and in English. Some comparisons have been made to bands like Cardiacs  (Turtle's 1994 album in fact has a song titled Cardiako) and NoMeansNo.

Deep Turtle broke up in 1996 but reformed again in 2002, only to disband again in 2004 due to drummer Erjossaari's insurmountable difficulties with tinnitus, which forced him to quit the band.

Deep Turtle made Finnish music history by being the first Finnish band to be invited to do a John Peel session in 1994. Contrary to public belief, Peel was not present at the studio, and he never managed to meet the band in person.

Track Listing:

01 - Tiodt  Ha-tuzta  Tostroid
02 - Bay zutus  Cardiako  Iim
03 - Valz  Hot Mambo  Antivalz
04 - Ørsentipede  Supraberber  Carrier
05 - Pendulum  Mikrozufé  Bourno

If the song titles, album title, or band name isn't enough to have you wondering what the fuck this can possibly sound like, then I don't know what else to say.  All I know is that this is essential.

Plutocracy was a Grindcore band from Atherton California and a major player in the West Bay underground fast music scene. They existed from 1988-1993 and then reformed in 1998 to record an album to honor former bass player Dan "Zodiac Iller" Hogan who had recently passed. Plutocracy's musical style can be summarized in one word: Dankcore. A mix of Grindcore, distortion, movie samples, gangtsa' rap and multiple screaming voices with references to killing cops, smoking weed and inside jokes regarding their "crew", known to many as the "Doomryderz". The group consisted of Stinkweed (guitar, vocals), Kalmex (guitar, vocals), Frank Ripple (bass), Battle Axe Max (Max Ward, drums), Dan Hogan (bass, vocals), Billy (bass), Chris V (bass), Jessie (vocals) and Mike (bass). They put out a demo called "Progress", several split 7" records with 976, Aproctous, Discordance Axis, Phobia and a few EPs one titled "Snitch" and the other "Freedom Denied" which were all later released on the Dankstahz CD. In 98' came the final Plutocracy album Sniping Pigz.

Even today their influence is still strong in the underground music scene. The former members themselves did everything but slow down after the demise of Plutocracy. They went on to form such bands as Spazz, Agents Of Satan, No Le$$, Kalmex & The Riffmerchants, Go Like This! and Kompound (a rap group) as well as form record labels and continue to push the envelope in the West Coast scene.

Benumb

Formed in 1994, in the San Francisco Bay Area, BENÜMB quickly built a respected reputation within the hardcore community with their explosive, aggressive sound. Withstanding various lineup changes during their early years, this 5-piece D.I.Y. powerhouse has solidified into an absolutely vicious assembly that lives and thrives within multiple musical scenes. After honing their music for almost a year, a split 7" with SHORT HATE TEMPER was released in mid-1995 on the Same Day label.

BENÜMB took the next year and a half to further develop their style of pounding hardcore/thrash as they played tons of shows with friends and peers MAN IS THE BASTARD, SPAZZ, EXHUMED, DYSTOPIA and CAPITALIST CASUALTIES, among others, all the while remembering and appreciating the unity and friendships they were building. 1997 was a busy year for BENÜMB, as the band recorded and released numerous seven inch records, including splits with DUKES OF HAZZARD and APARTMENT 213. Their crushing live set at the infamous Fiesta Grande festival was recorded and released as part of the Fiesta Comes Alive! LP on Slap A Ham. After following the band's progression, witnessing their live performances and hearing their angry bursts of unreal frustration, Relapse had no choice but to get involved. In late 1997 the destructive Gear In The Machine 7" was released on the Relapse 7" series and in 1998, a killer live split-flexi with SUPPRESSION accompanied issue ..3 of the notorious Monkeybite fanzine to an enormous response.

In May of 1998, BENÜMB released their first full-length, Soul Of The Martyr, which delivered 38 atomic clouts of ferocious hardcore/grind in the California tradition. Unveiling caustic new material alongside the Gear... recordings and material from the APARTMENT 213 and the (forthcoming) AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED splits, Soul... also contained BENÜMB's full live performance from the Fiesta Comes Alive! recording. Soul Of The Martyr was fueled by anger, influenced by metal, and destined for cult status! Songs such as the shocking Agony 1 (:18) and the oh-so-sudden Agony 2 (:05) showed the grinding ferocity of the band, while tracks like Stood Up and Sold Out and Deprivation revealed an overwhelming other side. The inner-sleeve of the release showed BENÜMB's respect and dedication to the underground scene that they thrive in as the band listed the contact information to 101(!) of their favorite bands. Soul Of The Marytr met to a rousing response, and the band promoted the release by completing several mini-tours of the U.S., and appeared at every major U.S. heavy music festival in the two years that followed, including the 1998 and 1999 Milwaukee Metalfests and the 1998 and 1999 March Metal Meltdowns.

BENÜMB then issued an eye-opening affirmation to the declining state of society with Withering Strands Of Hope. Produced by Bart Thurber (SPAZZ, EXHUMED) at Oakland's House Of Faith, Withering Strands Of Hope assails the listener with hostile hardcore/grind and is a grand platform for the band's venomous commentary. Remarkable songs like Once And Never Again, Oxygen Thief, Father To The Fatherless and Ascend From Persecution showed BENÜMB railing against apathy, suppression and neglect with a take-no-prisoners ferocity and activist's aggressiveness. Withering Strands Of Hope was the soundtrack to an impending revolution and musical mutiny at its anarchistic apex.

Following shortly after in the spring of 2002, BENÜMB attacked again, this time in the form of the critically-acclaimed split 3" CD with labelmates and grind visionaries PIG DESTROYER. In addition to being the band's best-recieved recording to date, this split EP showcased an intense evolution in the band's sound with the return of Paul Pontikoff (VULGAR PIGEONS) on guitars.

BENÜMB have established a reputation among punks and metalheads alike as one of the most aggressive American hardcore bands. (taken from their myspace page)
