Paramnesia - UNRU (Split)

Genre: Atmospheric Black Metal
Origin: France / Germany
Artist: Paramnesia / UNRU

Album: Split
Year: 2014
Quality: 320kbps

Here we have two "Atmospheric" Black Metal bands from Europe. But no keyboards or any of that shit. Pure atmosphere from killer riffs and production. These two seemed to jump out of nowhere in the past few years and are a definite force to be reckoned with in the world of generic black metal crap going around. I would even recommend this to anyone that isn't a Black Metal fan. Good shit, man!

I know choder would have dug this, so here you go. Rest well my friend...

Sol & Blodtru, Old Europa Death Chants

A new collaboration from two Danish one man acts, Blodtru and Sol from Paradigms Recordings.

I'm a huge Sol fan, being the doom geek that I am, but hadn't heard too much from Blodtru. That said, I was a tiny bit disappointed with this one. That's not to say it's a weak album, it's not. I just felt like it could have been tied together a bit better. It starts with a full 10 minutes of chant with some feedback in the middle that brings to mind some of Sunn O)))'s work with Atilla. Then goes into Sol's normal style with obvious black metal influence, which works well.
There is less folk influence going on than I had expected from the label's description and from the summaries of Blodtru's work that I had read.

Overall though, a good release. It's definitely more subdued than what Sol fans will be used to. His other releases seem to favor a "wall of sound" approach, whereas this one is more contemplative, so this one will be good for those who found I am Infinity and Let There Be a Massacre to be a little too much.

As always, support the artist if you like what you hear!

Hiems - 2009 - Worship or Die

2009 - Worship or Die

Personnel:
Agol - all instruments and vocals
Razor SK - lead and clean guitars on track 2, 6, 7, 8
m:A Fog - drums on track 3 and 10
Paolo Apollo Negri - hammond on track 8, 9 , 10
Daniele Mandelli - lead guitar on track 10

Total Playing Time: 54:22
File Size: 122.87 mb  (320kbps)

Formed in 2006, “Worship or Die” is the second full-length album by Hiems from Italy. Hiems is a one man band consisting of Algol (also a member of Forgotten Tomb and Dead?) on all instruments and vocals. Although it may be filed under Black Metal, it seems to be used more aesthetically than musically. There are moments of intense tremolo guitar and yes the vocals have a harsh rasp to them, but it definitely leans more to the Black and Roll side of metal with elements of Death Metal, Thrash and Hard Rock thrown in too. An interesting combination and happily Algol pulls it off effortlessly.
From start to finish, you might find an odd mix of music here. Starting with the short instrumental “Worship or Die”, kind of martial and somewhat cheesy is the best description. This all changes with the song “I”, which blasts off with bombastic drums. It’s a complex composition, but it still retains harmony and brutality. The full production adds to the wall of intense sound. “Scum Destroyer” is a harsh mid tempo piece. The Black and Roll sound is perfected here, that is until a flurry of blast beats punctuates our ears. “W.O.F.” is buzzing with dizzying guitars and savage riffs. There’s a short interlude called “Adventum” which gives us a breather from the break neck riffs. Here we have ambient sounds, babies crying and bells tolling, a nice touch all together. “Bringer of Light” jars us back to the theme with intense wall of sound. Slow and heavy as hell, but at the same time lots of interesting chord changes and thrashy rhythm guitars. It’s very atmospheric in a memorable way. “Wounds Just Death Can Heal”, this is an awesome mix of early 80’s thrash (think Exodus’ Bonded By Blood and early Metallica) and Enslaved. “Hiems” brings back the slow and heavy sound like we heard previously on “Bringer of Light”. It does feature a short intermission with a psychedelic Hammond organ that oddly works; if not adds to the dark atmosphere. The Hammond organ appears again in “290979”, this time with a background of stormy ambient sounds. Here’s a switch from the theme that’s just perfect, “Race With The Devil”. This is just a great 70’s hard rock influenced song (reminiscent of Coven, Black Widow and even The Devil’s Blood). Tons of memorable riffs are here and it’s something that you find yourself listening to over and over.
Apart from the intro, everything here is just great music. While they are comparable to bands like Averse Sefira and Leviathan, you can certainly add Virus, Satyricon and Enslaved to the list too. Vocals are a mix of Death Metal rasp and Black Metal growl; but not so much that the lyrics are not understandable. Overall you can say that Algol is an excellent musician as well as producer, his attention to detail and hard work is heard in every note. It’s really refreshing to listen to a cd that not only is full of surprises but is memorable too.- review by Viktorya @ Heathen Harvest

I haven't been posting as much as I'd like to lately, work is kicking my ass, but I've got some stuff  coming. I have a bunch of videos that I have been editing from recent live shows here in New Orleans, as well as a bunch of cajun music that I have been ripping from vinyl's so be on the lookout for that.  Now, on to Hiems.

Let me just say this: This album ROCKS.  I have been listening to this a good bit lately, I'm sure most of you will enjoy it.  Especially you Mari!   This has been posted on a few other blogs, but all of them in horrible 128kbps, I personally encoded this in 320kbps. Enjoy.

Life Is A Lie - Tomo II: Sobre os Fundamentos d'Ordem

I can't find much info. at all about this band but they're from Brazil and they play some kick ass crusty, blackened deathgrind. I've been wearin' this shit out lately and totally recommend it...

"LIFE IS A LIE began its activities on 2001, and released its debut full length CD on 2002 through Laja Rekords. Lots of gigs were done, including shows with World Burns To Death (USA), Rompeprop (Holland), Fubar (Holland), Força Macabra (Finland), Isacaarum (Czech Republic) and more. In 2007 Mutilation Records released the second full lenght: "Tomo II: Sobre os Fundamentos d A Ordem". Soon a split 7EP with the grindcore masters from ROT will be release. Music wise, the band has influences from grindcore, crust, death and black metal, not worrying to be tied to any particular genre or scene. Life is A Lie has its own path. Lyric wise, the bands starting point is the death of the christian god and the countless consequences and questions resulting from this fact. A simultaneously strong, thought-provoking, cynic and painful point of view on the paths of humankind." ~ Band's Myspace

Fall Of The Bastards - Dusk Of An Ancient Age (2004)

Dusk Of An Ancient Age (2004)

Genre - Black Metal/Death Metal
Origin - Portland, Oregon
Time - 48:34 min.
File - 97.58 MB (320kbps)

With "Dusk of an Ancient Age" Portland, Oregon’s Fall of the Bastards concocts an interesting hybrid of shrill Black Metal violence, throaty Death Metal pummel, and clear, sharp NWOBHM/NWOSDM melody. The results are a powerful and compelling mixture displaying the far-reaching effects and influence of Black Metal on young, up-and-coming American musicians.

While Dusk of an Ancient Age’s overall tone is far distant from “pure” or “rulebook” Black Metal, its marriage of trebly, repetetive riffing to muscular lead guitar work is enthusiastic and authentic enough to silence those who might accuse FOTB of stealing Black Metal’s grim birthright, and of diluting its savage maelstrom. It is genuinely refreshing to hear a young American band splice together Scandinavian Black Metal influences with a strong At The Gates sense of melody, while avoiding the pitfall of merely “aping” the sounds. Purists be warned, there is as much Death Metal (and occassional glimpses of Hardcore) lurking within the folds of Dusk of an Ancient Age. The delivery of vocalist Jason alternates between a shrieked rasp not dissimilar from Marduk to guttural chest-bursting bellows that could messily bore into any Goregrind record.

Interesting things are rustling in the Northwestern corner of the USA, and Fall of The Bastards are only one of the leathery musical serpents to crack a scaled eyelid in that rainy clime. Following the lead of the criminally underheard Teenage Cthulu, and contemporary with Olympia, Washington’s Wolves In the Throne Room, Fall of the Bastards further convolute a sometime Black Metal tradition in their interest in active and distant touring. This DIY approach will hopefully ensure a wide audience for this interesting band. The well-designed cd version of Dusk of an Ancient Age offers four live tracks, which, if indicative of Fall of the Bastard’s live sound, show that FOTB live are raw and energetic performers who are, if anything, even more triumphantly punishing without a recording studio’s polish. (a review taken from their myspace page)

Track List:
1. In The Midst Of Obsolete
2. Intrinsical Lost
3. Put To Death II
4. Signs Of Impending Apocalypse
5. Angelrot
6. Otherwise Blank Expression
7. Idiocy Parade
8. Dawn ( The Mourning After)
Bonus live Tracks 2/1/03
9. Where Dead Hang From Trees
10. Put To Death I
11. Otherwise Blank Expression
12. Wanderers Of A Deserted Plain

Fall Of The Bastards managed to put out a couple of splits, one with Wormwood and one with Book Of The Black Earth and two full lengths Where Dead Hang From Trees (2003) and this before calling it quits. This was released on Intollerant Messiah, the now defunct label from San Mateo, Ca. that was run by Lord Balsakk from the Agents Of Satan. I really liked this band I would say equal parts Death, Black metal and Crust. Since disbanding the members have moved on to form or join other kickass musical projects such as Splatterhouse, Oakhelm, L'Acephale and D'Gul, hit their page up by going here and check out what they are creating now days.

Dissection - The Somberlain (Reissue 2006 w/ bonus tracks)

Forgot all about this one til recently getting reacquainted with it. Classic!!! Totally still rides above most BM nowadays, far as I'm concerned, and should be mandatory listening for every black/death fan. Originally released in 1993...

"The Somberlain is the debut album from the highly influential blackened death metal band, Dissection. In the midst of all the second wave of black metal bands and melodic death metal bands, these guys stepped out and created what no other band had done at that time; bridging the gap between black metal and death metal and throwing in some melody. This was the key that brought these Swedish pioneers to the forefront of the underground metal scene.

The complexity of the music, the distinguishable melodies, and the haunting vocals of Jon Nödtveidt on The Somberlain are what set this band apart from every other blackened death metal band. Even in today's metal scene, with the countless amounts of bands doing the same style.

Another element with this album is the atmospheric presence. To me this means that when listening to the songs on the album you are just entranced and don't want to do anything other than sit back and enjoy what is coming out of your speakers. It just leaves you in a state of euphoria and makes you dumbfounded as to how a group of guys could produce such a masterful album that not even the likes of god could duplicate.

So if you are looking for an album that has a mixture of acoustic passages, black metal, death metal, melody and a haunting atmosphere then I highly suggest this album." ~ Metalstorm.net

Woe - A Spell For The Death Of Man (2008)

Genre: DSBM, USBM
Origin: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Time:  43:15

2008 - A Spell For the Death of Man

Woe, the now critically acclaimed one-man black metal project from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania based Chris Grigg, has hit home with its first powerful, unrelenting, and surprisingly unique offering on Stronghold Records.  In addition, Stronghold Records, too, is a very new face to the black metal scene, this being only the fourth release in the label's catalogue, and truthfully, perhaps one of the most important black metal releases out today.  In all sincerity, Woe is offering a lot more for the listener than the typical bullshit that we've all come to expect.  Chris has taken the same raw edge and made it personal.  He's not followed a path, copied a progression, or allowed his influences to write the music for him.  This is black metal from the soul, if such a pair can co-exist in all actuality (and indeed may even insult the artist as there are satanic themes to be found in the ritualistic style performed.)

Woe was born in 2007, long after the demise of USBM undergrounders Algol (whom released a split with the well-known face around here, Rory Heikkila, who was performing under the moniker Shroud of Despondency at the time.)  The first offering to the world under Woe came as a split DIY CD self-release with the crusty black thrashers from Philly, Infernal Stronghold.  Limited to 424 copies in four different versions (color-schemed), there weren't many people that were lucky enough to hear the one track that Woe had to offer with Ritual XIV, but those who did manage to grab a copy or who heard the band via myspace had been eagerly awaiting this debut release from this talented musician, and here we are with it finally in our grasps.

As mentioned, this is one of the most important works for black metal in America in the present.  Though the scene in general is breaking free of its mold, the stagnation that has gripped this country's blackened sense of music for some time now, very few are trying to take the music to an entirely new level spiritually and personally.  Woe's “A Spell for the Death of Man” is NOT your typical misanthropic black metal album.  This is a beautiful, moving piece of ferocious aggression.  If walls could be painted with blood in the majestic grandeur that is only seen in our dreams, this would no doubt be the soundtrack.  Movements throughout the album aren't limited by the confines of the black metal genre.  With epic harmonious guitar orchestrations, bound endlessly to post-rock / post-metal atmospheres through laid-back drumming and strummed guitar lines instead of never-ending tremolo picking (though these take up a great deal of the album and DO add so much to the fury bound within), A Spell for the Death of Mankind is nearly intoxicating for those who can really throw their hearts into this music.  There are, indeed, those out there who know what I'm talking about.  Black metal like this is like a drug.  A place where we can finally breathe and fill our lungs with comfort, a place we can't find in the complex normal world of today.

And as you read this, it should come to mind that there isn't much more that I can say as a journalist to push you towards this incredible release.  If there's one album that you buy in the first half of '09 for what little money people seem to be able to pull together today in this economy, then this is that album for the black metal fans out there.  A Spell for the Death of Man is bleak and depressive, but it shines with the radiance of a million full moons.  People, this is what we've been waiting for, the new USBM. - review by Sage @ Heathen Harvest

Here is a collection of singles and songs that were featured on various splits from France's The Austrasian Goat.  Apparently, Austrasia was the name of a forgotten land, between France and Germany. Centuries after centuries, the people of Austrasia refused the christian influence and kept a relative independence until the 18th century. Through the ages, this land kept marks of ancient pagan rites, scares of deceases and major conflicts, and shroud of suffering, hidden behind apparent serenity. This green and gray desert attests the fall of a civilization.

This is what I would describe as what would happen if Gnaw Their Tongues, Khanate, Nortt, and (insert relentlessly heavy doom band here) all had sex.  The Austrasian Goat would be their love child.  That's probably not the best description of the music, but I'm sure you get the idea.

Kilgore (Demo '96) - Vual (Rehearsal Takes '04)

This is a pretty rough post but the music is so damn rare, and it's in 320, I figured I'd throw it out there. I have no idea what the names of the songs are. Hell, I have no idea where I GOT this cd from...

Tracks 1-7 are from a demo by Kilgore, Sammy Duet and Zak Nolan's band pre-Goatwhore. It's evil and blackened like GW so if you dig that you'll probably dig this...

Tracks 8-10 are basically 3 one-minute rehearsal takes from the never completed album by Vual, which was Sammy and Kelly Pitre (Audie's brother). No vocals on those, just music. Good to have for any NOLA underground completist...

Beherit - Oath Of Black Blood

2004 re-issue of the classic 1991 release. The black metal cliches "raw" and "primitive" barely scratch the surface of this one. Check this out from Encyclopaedia Metallum -

"Trivia:
Turbo Music sent a large sum of money to the Beherit members to record "The Oath of Black Blood" album, though they didn't expect that Holocausto and friends would spend all of money on drugs and booze. In the end, there was no album, so Turbo Music decided to release the "Demonomancy" demo along with "Dawn of Satan's Millennium" 7'' as a full length. It is still widely regarded as their first album."

Whether that story's true or not, Oath Of Black Blood and Drawing Down The Moon are Beherit essentials!

"One of the darkest, most brutal, most perverse creatures of the blackest abysses south of heaven! In the year 1991 "The Oath Of Blood" marked the debut-album of Finnish psychopaths BEHERIT. 99% of all Metalians hate them to the blood, while the rest truly worships them. These hell's children offer everything that the underground of the "black" scene would use as ideal: An absolutely subterranean production, most primitive songs and an atmosphere that is so cold like flames from hell!

No band ever has been deeper in the underground as BEHERIT here! Even the prime examples for the nihilistic sound like old DARKTHRONE or BLACK FUNERAL sound like mass-compatible chart-breakers compared to this one! The best produced track is the intro, but what then breaks loose is the pure hell (for each HiFi-friend!). Ten hardly definable walls of white noise, straight-ahead. No lyrics have been printed, I'm not even sure, if there are any to be found. And if so, then would they be too extreme for this world?

Those, who enter, let loose all hopes. Because this groats is the weirdest noise that you could possibly imagine. And therefore it cannot be more cult!!! And now all: THE DEVIL HAVE SONS THEY CALL BEHERIT. (Quote from the info-sheet of Turbo Music - just as much cult as the band itself.) Watch out for the re-release, which should be out any day now. You can get it from every mailorder and the bedlam next door" - Metalobserver

Amesoeurs - Amesoeurs

French black metal/shoegaze. Apparently, these guys were around before Alcest's new sound, and comparing them to new Alcest is pretty unfair. They do have some parallels, but both bands are far from sounding like a clone of the other.

Highly reccomended album overall, especially if you do like the whole shoegaze sound, but even if you don't.

This album was recorded as a break from the Resurgence trilogy but I really don't know much else about it. It has a garagey feel to it and it's disjointed and all over the place but besides that it's got some pretty amazing music. This album is just... out of this world... scary as all hell.. this is real...

Vrolok is one of my favorite USBM bands. He (D) mixes occult satanic ritual black metal with psychedelic elements to create an unnerving and horrific atmosphere. This album is pretty much incredible so make sure to check it out. For fans of Vomit Orchestra, Black Funeral, Sangraal and Abaddon.

Lost Life is a German project that plays intense black metal with an almost punk/grunge type of style. Sometimes they remind me of Nirvana mixed with a band like Burzum, an interesting blend, indeed. Lost Life does it really well, too. They will have quiet moments that will just explode into a ferocious onslaught. I expect a lot of good things from this great band.

Suffer - 2004 - When Darkness Falls

Suffer was forged from the deep swamps of Louisiana, unleashing the intense musical ideas and ambitions brought forth by Tomas Viator (Disincarnate, Acid Bath, Shrum, Astaroth) Kelly Pitre (Shrum, Vual) and Tim Holsinger (Goatwhore, Psycho Scenario). Suffer takes their listeners on a voyage into a cold world where blasphemy reigns supreme, war is never ending and the sound of steel breaking bones echoes for miles. With the unrelenting, powerful drive of Tommy's drums, the demonic rumble of Kelly's bass and the hellish screams and chainsaw guitar riffs of Tim, Suffer brings black metal to new level without losing their old school attitude. Suffer's debut album entitled "When Darkness Falls" was released on Northern Blaze Records June 1st 2004.
