2003 - Texas Hill Country

Sean Raiford formed the Resin Valley Boys with the goal of bringing the sounds of classic country and western swing music back to a world that had forgotten how to two-step. Sean and the Boys quickly built a reputation as the swinginest band from Houston Texas, cementing that reputation with the release of their first full length album, "Texas Hill Country," in 2003. Their first nominations for Best C&W Act and Best New Act from the Houston Press Music Awards soon followed. Since then, Sean Reefer and the Resin Valley Boys have appeared onstage with such Texas legends as Asleep At The Wheel, Dale Watson, FlameTrick Subs, Alvis Wayne, and Wayne "The Train" Hancock, and national acts like David Allan Coe, Deke Dickerson, Scott H. Biram, Dave Alvin and the Guilty Men, Weary Boys, Big Sandy and his Flyrite Boys, Wanda Jackson, Joe Ely, Billy Joe Shaver, and Junior Brown.

    In 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 Sean and the Boys received nominations for Best C&W Act from the Houston Press Music Awards, winning the prestigious title in '05 and '06 and '09. In 2007 the band won both the American Marijuana Music Award and Global Marijuana Music Award for best Country Song and in 2008 they won the Global Marijuana Music Award for best Country Song.

    Sean has been busy singing all over the great state of Texas ever since, winning new fans in every honky-tonk, dancehall, and lounge he and the Boys play in. Currently, they are in the studio recording material for a forthcoming, brand new full length release. Watch for them soon in your town. Mick Jagger - Wandering Spirit (1993)

It's been at least 8 years since I last heard this cd and totally forgot about it until I ran across it yesterday looking for something else. I popped it in and was completely blown away by how good the music's held up over the years! I guess I took this one for granted back in the day, but it's in pretty heavy rotation around here right now. Mick sounds great and this cd offers a little bit of pretty much everything, all done EXTREMELY well...Has a badass cover of Bill Wither's "Use Me" featuring Lenny Kravitz too.

I'm really new to Nadja and they have a huge discography so I guess I just started at random after reading some reviews. I picked a good one to post, I think, because I'm enjoying the hell out of it. Nadja play crushing drone/doom that just hypnotizes you with the gradual changes and the billion little things going on everywhere. Outstanding album.

Joey Allcorn - All Alone Again - 2009

Woah! Somehow or another I completely forgot that Joey was releasing a new album and I'm totally kicking myself in the ass for not finding this a lot sooner. In case you missed his first cd (which is posted here) don't make that mistake this time! I highly recommend this guy to anybody who likes Hank Sr., Jr. or III or Earl Scruggs, Faron Young, Jimmy Martin, etc...Joey Allcorn is one of the very few country musicians that are trying to take country music back to it's 50's and 60's heyday, current popularity and album sales be damned. Fuck the radio.....

And sorry for the super-sized review but it's a good one :


"Self-discovery. It is a lifelong journey for all of us, and the journey is different for each of us. As each day passes, we learn a little more about who we are, and the direction in which we’re headed. This is certainly true for Joey Allcorn, and it is made evident by the lyrics of the opening track of his new album, All Alone Again. While the track, “Honky Tonkin Ramblin’ Man”, may seem to be a simple lively honky tonk number on the surface, much more can be interpreted from Allcorn’s words. He knows what he likes: “songs about murder, drinkin, God, drugs, and jail”. He knows what he is: “just a hillbilly singer with a five-piece band”. And perhaps, most importantly, he knows what he is not: “the rebel front man of an outlaw band”.

"I'm not a rebel or an outlaw or anything like that," says Allcorn. " I just make the kind of country music that I like. I'm not trying to re-invent the wheel or do anything revolutionary, I just want to write songs and make records for people who enjoy authentic country music."

All Alone Again, is an authentic reflection of who Joey Allcorn is as a songwriter and as a performer. Instead of making an album with an “underground scene” in mind, he instead made the wise decision to make a record with himself in mind. The result is a cohesive, polished product that reflects not the artist that Allcorn wants to be, but the artist that he is. The album borrows heavily from tradition, but does so in an honest way that makes it accessible to today’s listeners that crave that timeless blend of authenticity, fiddle, and steel.

Perhaps Joey Allcorn’s greatest musical love is the country love song, and he can discuss cheatin’ hearts in the form of an upbeat toe-tapper or of a classic weeper. Plenty of both can be found on All Alone Again. On the upbeat side, there are songs like “Huntsville”, a sarcasm-laced send-off to lady-friend who has up and left him for another man. “The Next Time We Break Up”, a final warning to indecisive lover, could easily be mistaken for a lost Buck Owens song. Another kind of warning, the kind to a guy thinking about confessing his love to a girl, is stated in “Don’t Start Thinkin Like That”. And the Harlan Howard-esque “I’d Be Over You By Now” finds Allcorn in the middle of a classic “aw shucks” moment, knowing he should have exited a relationship long before it reached its unfortunate end.

It’s a good thing these upbeat songs are present on All Alone Again because Allcorn’s “crying time” numbers on this record are the best he’s ever penned. He summons his inner-Hank Williams to deliver the very clever “Just Another Song”, and displays a yodel that Jimmie Rodgers would be proud of on the album’s closing title track. Both deal with broken hearts and loneliness, but some tracks have an even darker aura. Death seems to lurk around every corner, especially on songs like “Six Feet Down”, which will remind listeners of the star-crossed lovers of Edgar Allan Poe’s timeless poem “Annabelle Lee”, and the eerie “Honky Tonk Hell”, in which a haunted juke box and "dead men singing" set the scene.

This makes sense, as Allcorn’s heroes are never far from his mind, and on All Alone Again, he recruited many of the musicians who recorded with his legendary heroes. Fiddle-master Hank Singer, who currently tours with George Jones, Lloyd Green, the most recorded pedal steel guitarist in history and bassist Dave Rowe from Johnny Cash's last touring band were brought on board, as was Drifting Cowboy steel-guitarist Don Helms. Helms passed away in August of 2008, and All Alone Again features some of his final recording sessions. Combine these legendary musicians with modern masters like Johnny Hiland, and Chris Scruggs, and you have just the right sonic mix for the authentic country brilliance that brings Allcorn’s musical vision to life.

As he sings in “Lonesome, Lovesick Man”, Joey Allcorn seems to understand he is living a predestined life. It could really be the theme song for not only the album, but for his own journey of self-discovery. He has been dressing in 1950sstyle western suits on stage for years, but finally on All Alone Again, he completely embraces his true identity as the lonesome, lovesick man he discusses in song. Sure it’s hard, but like he says in “Waitin’ By the Railroad Tracks”, “I ain’t complainin’ ‘cause that’s my life”. At 28 years young, it can be said that Joey Allcorn knows who he is as an artist, and he is intent on showing anyone that’ll take the time to listen. Les Discrets is a solo project from Fursy Teyssier from Amesoeurs so you can kind of know what to expect. This is a rock album and there's virtually no black metal involved. So basically it's a beautifully crafted shoegaze album with swirling dreamy guitars, hypnotic rhythms and tender and smooth clean male vocals. If you like music with a wistful, nostalgic feeling throughout, this is for you.

Wow, this album is almost like a miracle. The whole thing just reminds me of slowed down versions of spaghetti western music and the atmosphere just engulfs you with a thick lazy haze. Trust me, you'll find this release interesting and beautiful.

Oh my god is this album ever a sing-along fun good time! This is Ben (Screeching Weasel) at his best and it's about as addictive as an album can get. This is one happy uplifting hop hop pogolicious rocking good time. Back to the basics of good time rock n roll on this one.

Aphek and Shechter has recorded and toured together for 3 years with the band ‘ED’ which broke up closely to when "Carusella" was born. Both are considered well known figures in the Israeli alternative music scene. Aphek initiated and produced the first Israeli Independent Alternative "outdoors" festival in the north of Israel which is called ‘Hutsmize’. Shechter in his past has recorded and toured with various Israeli bands such as: ‘Kruzenshtern & Parohod’; ‘Monotonix’; ‘O.B.E.Y’; ‘Flying Baby’, ‘Superdrive’ and many more.  ‘Carusella’ brings out the essence of “Boy-Girl”, “super loud”, “two people are enough”. Their live performance presents their tensed chemistry and explosive charged energies. Carusella's debut EP album shows their genuine and innovative approach to rock'n'roll, stretching the boundaries by writing unique hardcore songs yet arranging them in a poppy way. Now After two years of touring Europe and spreading their self produced/distributed debut EP, the two are touring the US.

Carusella  played New Orleans last Monday night.  They had to follow two of the heaviest sets I've witnessed in a LONG time.... Thou, followed by Haarp.  Needless to say, they did a great job.  They kept the energy flowing and I kept the beers flowing.  After Carusella, Torche closed the show.  It was definitely a strange lineup but somehow, it worked very well.

2005 - The Ultimate Collection 1972 - 1978

"Banjo & Sullivan disappeared amid a series of heinous homicides and were basically forgotten." That was the boilerplate from the group's website, though it was as fanciful as it was ominous. In actuality Banjo & Sullivan was a project created by Rob Zombie guerilla marketing-style to promote and support 2005's Devil's Rejects, the sequel to his 2003 cinematic debut, House of a 1000 Corpses. As the back-story went, Roy Sullivan and Adam "Fingers" Banjo shone briefly on the early-'70s honky tonk circuit with crowd-pleasers like "Dick Soup" and "I'm at Home Getting Hammered (While She's out Getting Nailed)." Their fictional career was abruptly ended in 1978, when Banjo, Sullivan, and their crew had a run-in with a group of homicidal freaks called the Devil's Rejects. The duo's crew were killed, but "Banjo & Sullivan were never found." Cue the music. In real life, the music was written and performed by Austin songwriter Jesse Dayton, who collaborated with Lew Temple and Zombie on the project. June 2005's Rob Zombie Presents...Banjo & Sullivan: The Ultimate Collection 1972-1978 carried the ruse even further, full as it was with the duo's fictional honky tonk. Still, it was in good fun. Well, good in a dirty way, considering the subject matter of Rejects, but an ambitious project nonetheless that contained a lot of great little details. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide

Jesse Dayton did a superb job with these songs.  Every song on here will either have you laughing your asshole off, or stompin' your feet.  Tracks 1 and 4 are my personal favorites but overall this is damn good.
