Kermit Ruffins - 2007 - Live at Vaughn's

Kermit Ruffins (born December 19, 1964) is a jazz trumpeter, singer and composer from New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. He has been heavily influenced by Louis Armstrong, Louis Jordan and Eddy Jefferson. Ruffins accompanies a large portion of his songs with his own vocals, and he says that the highest note he can hit on trumpet is a fortissimo C note. Most of his bands perform New Orleans jazz standards, though he also composes many of his own pieces. Jon Pareles of the New York Times wrote of Ruffins in a July 16, 2001 article, stating that "Mr. Ruffins is an unabashed entertainer who plays trumpet with a bright, silvery tone, sings with off-the-cuff charm and never gets too abstruse in his material".

Kermit Ruffins is the closest the 21st century is likely to get to a personification of the spirit of traditional New Orleans jazz. Here's a relatively unknown Norwegian project formed from members of Taake and Gaahlskagg, so there's not going to be a dissapointment if you are a fan of those bands. This album is raw, fast, evil and well played. I really enjoy it and I hope you like it, too.

Heimdalls Wacht play a dreamy hynotizing blend of pagan folk and black metal. The songs sound ancient with the battle cries always in the distance. There's really a lot going on in these songs and it makes for an interesting album. I love this band, they are the saviors of black metal.

Kamchatka - 2005 - Kamchatka

Kamchatka are a Swedish power trio highly influenced by late 1960s and early 1970s blues-rock bands. Their sound combines elements of blues-rock, stoner rock and psychedelic rock.
Kamchatka took their name from the volcanically active Russian Kamchatka Peninsula that divides the Okhotsk and the Bering Sea.

Well it's a shame this band split up because I think they were onto something pretty cool. I didn't like this too much at first but it kept growing on me and now i just think it's wonderful. I think the term i would use to describe them is post black pop. Anyways, it's good, so enjoy!

Another great black metal band from the Ukraine, Kladovest serves up some icy cold, mechanical, inhuman music just as expected. This is definitely for fans of Hate Forest, Astrofaes, and Drudkh. I'm Anticipating their next release titled "Escape in Melancholy" which is gonna showcase Thurios on vocals. I can't wait for that one, but right now I'm really liking this.

The 2009 E.P., released with the same lineup, has a harsher guitar sound and adds the bass guitar fuzz more typical of the genre, which stands out on slower tracks "Durendal Forsaken" and "Mons Sermo Incendia". The tracks are longer on average, the shortest being over seven minutes, and the album feels more like a movie soundtrack than a collection of songs. "If They Were Men" clocks in at a whopping nine and a half minutes , subjecting listeners to a long, slow intro, erratic guitar solos, and an ultra-fuzzy bass solo that ends with non-resolving dissonance. The second track, "Durendal Forsaken", runs the gamut of metal styles, beginning with New Orleans sludge, making a short sprint through Exodus-influenced thrash, and climaxing at another moody midsection, one which likens the band to a very slow Amon Amarth and reveals again the band's knack for composition. The song has three false-endings. "Blindsight" is a lyrical ouroboros beginning and ending with the words "Blackest, coldest heart" in which the god Ares warns his successor "One needs the patience of a saint to cultivate this hate". This E.P. ends stronger than the other, the last track an opus in which gods and giants destroy the earth.




Don't miss out on this one either.  Haarp fucking slays!!  NOLA sludge/doom at it's best.  One of my personal favorite bands.

The 2007 E.P. begins with guitar feedback and an unedited drum count-in like many sludge records, but opts for the cleaner bass guitar sound found in more traditional metal genres, rather than the fuzz-saturated bass sound of many stoner and sludge recordings. The first track, "Soothsayer" begins slow as expected but builds to a nice, up-tempo groove reminiscent of stoner bands like C.O.C. and St. Vitus. The riffs in "Blackhand" bring to mind a slow motion murder scene from a horror movie. "Fog Cutter" is an interesting track, with two guitar solos that could not be more different from one another in style, building into a section that is moody, mature, and melodic. The main tempo of the song generates that wonderful urge to slowly nod the head like a pump jack on an oil pad, and just when you think they're going to speed it up they run the slow riff for another 40 seconds. "Synthetic Sense" feels like it could be a newly-discovered track left over from a Crowbar or Acid Bath session, so much so that I kept instinctively expecting Dax Riggs to make a vocal appearance. The dynamic tempo changes of "Dissemination" register very much like a non-sludge record, reminding me more of Gojira or Mastodon, and the track definitely supports Haarp's diversity of influence. - Brandon Bowers

Ed Hall were a pretty unknown band but I saw them live back in the early 90's and it was just an incredible experience so i rushed out and bought all their albums and they were all good but on this one, they brought everything together. It's a melodic, abrasive, noisy and interesting album which requires repeated listenings. I hope you enjoy them as much as i do. I have their earlier albums too, so if you want them just holler.

This album is just amazing to me. It's as if every single song would be perfect at a funeral. It's pretty mellow and the atmosphere is just stinking thick with despair. For some reason i just love these Iranian one man black metal bands. This album just goes on for a month and never gets boring. The only fault is the album cover, but I'm sure it's good if you could see it. The song titles are unintentionally hilarious.

This demo sounds every bit as good as most full lengths so don't let that scare you off. It's a one man side project from the vocalist and guitar player of the symphonic black metal band, Ceremonial Castings. This, however, isn't a symphonic album. It's a very enjoyable, evil and glorious album.

Morning Forty Federation - 2007 - Ticonderoga

Morning 40 Federation is a jazz, funk and rock band from the Ninth Ward of New Orleans. The band began in 1998 and cites influences of King Oliver, Tom Waits and Jon Spencer. The Morning 40 Federation disbanded after their last show at One Eyed Jacks on Toulouse Street in New Orleans (2/20/2009). They have also recorded as The New Orleans Hellhounds with Andre Williams. Can You Deal With It? has a release date of July 29, 2008. The Morning 40 Federation are booked to perform a reunion show on October 31, 2009, at the Voodoo Experience music festival.
