Nice to be back blogging like in the old Sludgeswamp days …
Stank were not from NOLA but they made some glorious, filthy, corrosive, molasse-thick, uncut sludge metal. Stank (such a name!) was rather short-lived (1998-2002) and involved guys from fine acts such as Mugwart, Beaten Back to Pure and Lunch, besides Kilara, Alabama Thunderpussy, etc. Therefore the last-known line-up included Kevin Whitley on guitar/vocals, Greg Bulman on bass and Dave Johnson aka D.C. on drums. Stank just released a split with Mugwart in 1999 and only one, crazily badass full-length album, Slug Trail Eyes, in 2000. The latter landed like a burning meteorite in the Swamp short before the adventure ended in mid 2011 and thanks to a close friend of the band.
I feel sharing Stank’s old kickass tunes may be nice for thanking my mates who invited me here and an awesome way for plunging into the mood of Swampchode’s blog … \m/

The Misanthrope Project - Your World Is Sickening (2009)
Members of this band came from this long ass list of bands… Mugwart, Lunch, Beaten Back To Pure, Sourvein, Hailhornet, Electric Frankenstein, and Buzzard…
Hellridemusic.com review -
Recorded sometime last year at Sniper Studios by the dubious Vince Burke (who also shreds his axe here); TMP harness an off putting and unfriendly vibe over the course of these five epics of fucked up doom and gloom. Part Mugwart/Beaten back to Pure southern scum, part Grief/early Buzzov*en slug trail terror and part Yobian, psychedelic glory, the quintet rounded out by Justin (guitar), Ahmasi (bass) and Joey (drums) are one of the most unique entities going in the American sludge/doom underworld right now. The instruments are laden with effects and cosmic ambience, but the riffs, low-end and general groove clamp down on a number of scathing, world decimating moments that will keep your head nodding and your whiskey bottle empty, as this is music perfectly accompanied by a big, plentiful fifth of Wild Turkey.
Beasley is as pissed off as ever; whispering and screaming like a demon beneath a blanket of blown out distortion and suffocation. Drummer Joey is a particularly key component to the mix, locking down the band’s sound with a requisite doomified crunch, but also getting wild and fill crazy in the vein of John Stanier’s tightest Helmet performances.
Beginning with a smoky, repetitive riff and tribal drum pummel in the vein of Enemy of the Sun era Neurosis, “Cigarette Burn” wraps a threatening aura around your head from the very first note. Beasley’s haggard scream thunders in the distance, before the volume kicks in full bore with twin guitars blazing through plundering riffs and psychedelic leads alike, as the effects swirl around your ears from a seemingly inexplicable number of amps and directions. This is a cyclone of endless noise and drugged out vocal shouts, with a grasp on overdriven Beaten Back to Pure metal as played by Kirk Fisher with Mike Scheidt coordinating the affair and offering musical mysticism. There’s a moment of sampling, with cleaner dissonant guitars that frighteningly feels as if the song’s going to come out of your speakers and beat the living fuck out of you, as you sit there knowing damn well the band is holding back for one last outburst at the end, to create a proper emotional catharsis.
I had high expectations for the next track based on the power of “Cigarette Burn” and track number two’s tour de force moniker, “Jesus Crossed his Arms as if to Fight me”. That’s about the most genius song title I’ve ever heard, and luckily the music is even better! Hell, this is probably the best track on the album for my money. Slowly creeping in like The Fog from Carpenter’s underrated ghost flick (I don’t care what ya’ll say, that was a decent film), lush bass lines provide the perfect foundation for Vince and Justin to weave their shimmering, doom influenced chord progressions around. Less than a minute slowly wanders by in this glorious, almost Hawkwind meets Yob passage, before a crushing riff takes brief hold of your psyche. Descending back into the track’s soothing intro, Charlie whispers several distant phrasings before TMP head back into total crush mode for the duration. Musically, this is much in line with Yob/Middian but with all of the fleshy chunks and broken fingernails contained on Berserker Records’ classic South of Hell compilation disc. At the 2:22 mark, the song tinkers with drawn out, bent notes that create a fierce, grating element of depression and all out noise, as the mucky rhythms cut out their own swath beneath the layered guitar shred. Then it’s on to one of those career defining riffs that many bands spend their whole life searching for with Charlie spewing his guts out in his one of a kind, rotten tone that’s another trump card for any band of this caliber.
You want a sick scream you go to Charlie. You want a sick riff/groove and production job, you go to Vince. You get them both here, and with three other giants backing them up…well the sky is the limit. The groove in this part of the song is one that can be effortlessly lumped into the legendary realm, with Joey’s pounding emphasis on fills and complexity adding even more life to the unholy din.
Fans of that whole psyched out doom/sludge movement such as Yob, Soulpreacher, Sleep and Warhorse will eat this tune up for their three daily squares from here to eternity. Fearsomely pushing its way forward with a Grief munching on a handful of uppers mentality, “Oxycodone” is serious about its depression, but isn’t in the mood to sit around and take it slothfully…well, that is after it nurses its early a.m. pill and booze hangover first. Instead it pushes forward with combat ready timekeeping, fetid low-end, feedback and surprisingly uptempo riffs after rolling past its slow, sickly intro of distoro spoken word, 4/4 bludgeon and hopeless knuckle drag.
According to the book, this would be their most straightforward song on the disc, as the remaining tunes “Self Harm” and the 18 minutes of “Crushing Cops’ Heads in with a Skateboard, Suicide by Cop” are draped in psychedelic effects, whirlwinds of sound, completely freaked out vocals and an all around atmosphere of grim, head scratching mystique. The shorter of the two, “Self Harm” is still very rooted in gas huffing doom, with leaden riffs, crashing beats and vicious verbal snarls, but there’s extended segments of gut liquefying bass and psychedelic guitar sounds to keep you thoroughly bewildered from start to finish. The longer of the two, the 18 minutes of “Crushing Cops’ Heads…” is an indescribable maelstrom of samples, synth, psychedelic guitar leads, early 16ish grime riffs and shouted/spoken vocals with a little bit of anything and everything encompassed so far over this LP length outing.
At least two of these tracks will see the light of day as far as an official release is concerned. Actually, “Self Harm” should be available on a box set of 7” releases featuring other heralded acts such as Raw Radar War, Coffins and Fistula among others. “Crushing Cops’ Heads…” is due to come out on a split with Gospel of the Future. Too damn bad the other tracks are going to remain in limbo for the time being as TMP are one of the heaviest bands around. Although nothing about TMP rings as one dimensional heaviness; on the contrary, this shit is tight with great instrumental performances, a heaping helping of sludge/doom nihilism, sweltering psychedelic manipulation and a top of the line Vince Burke production.

Pig Destroyer/Gnob split - (1999)
Pig Destroyer/Gnob splitGenre - Grind/Comedic Thrash
Origin - Virginia
Time - 21:54 min.
File - 43.29 MB (320kbps)
This Robodog split CD features two extreme bands, Pig Destroyer and Gnob. Pig Destroyer is the more notable of the two, especially considering their recent signing to Relapse Records. Both bands deliver aggressive music, although their approaches are vastly different.
The first nine tracks of this sixteen track release are courtesy of Pig Destroyer, a grindcore band from Virgina. These guys are heavy. There's just no other way to describe them. Their pulsating metal and grindcore grooves are relentless, and almost scary. The vocals consist entirely of yells and screams, with an occasional death metal growl here and there. The band is definitely tight, and while they're prone to super fast machine-gun bursts of metal, they often slow down to pound out some blistering thrash metal. Pig Destroyer's nine tracks include a cover of The Stooges' "Down In The Street". Really, there's nothing boring about this 3-piece, and the fact that they don't have a bassist doesn't make them any less devastating.
We must admit that we don't know a thing about Gnob. We think they're from Virginia. Their music really has nothing in common with Pig Destroyer, expect that in the most general use of the term, you could call their offerings "metal". Gnob (bong backwards?) are difficult to figure out. Their songs are more comedic than anything, and they're certainly not a "tight" band. Thrash-comedy-rock-fuzz might be an appropriate description of Gnob. Then again, what the heck does that mean? The band even goes so far as to cover portions of the Mary Poppins soundtrack on "Merry Popskins". Strange stuff. -- (taken from Lambgoat)

File - 25.27 MB (320kbps)
Track List:
1. Megan
2. Ride Fast
3. Transmission
4. Lost
5. Circle Of You
The Index mix elements of new school hardcore with pulverizing grind blasts. Most appreciated are the absolutely throat destroying female vocals by The Index's screamer Elysia, who sounds like a cross between Blaine from The Accused and Schmeir from Destruction. The band also features two ex members of Enemy Soil, Richard and Mason.
The Index put out a s/t full length back in 2000' on a label called Displacer Beast. This 5 track disc was put out on Brick In The Face Anesthesia Recordings, a label that I think was run by one of the members of the band. The liner notes says it was recorded by Mark, one of the guitarist's in 2002 and it was released after the s/t full length.
I got this disc from a gig at 924 Gilman St. in Berkeley (around that time) from a couple of smokin hot punk chicks that were walking through the crowd handing out a stack of CD's! I remember getting this, a Watch Them Burn disc and a disc by a band called DeadFood. I should dig them out and post them sometime. Let me know what you think by leaving a comment.....haha, yeah right!

Enemy Soil - The Ruins Of Eden (1997)
The Ruins Of Eden (1997)Genre - Grind
Origin - Virginia
Time - 22:09 min.
File - 44.79 MB (320kbps)
Enemy Soil was a grindcore band from Virginia, USA formed by Richard Johnson, R. Mason & Vaughn that existed through most of the 1990s. Their lyrics are mostly about sociopolitical subjects with a few covering the "darker side" of personal relationships.
Enemy Soil had one album, "The Ruins of Eden" pressed on vinyl by Insolito Records and on CD by Clean Plate Records and a mini-album, "Fractured Theology" issued by Profane Existence FE. The rest of the band’s releases were EPs, split EPs, and compilation appearances. Some of the bands Enemy Soil put out splits with included Agoraphobic Nosebleed, pg.99, Wadge, Reversal Of Man and Corrupted.
Two of the guys that were in Enemy Soil went on to Pig Destroyer (JR & Brian). Other bands that have ex-Enemy Soil members include Drugs Of Faith (Richard Johnson), Blower (R.Mason/Richard Johnson), Exploding Meth Lab (R. Mason, Vaughn), Autoerotichrist (R.Mason), City of Caterpillar (Jeff Kane), Index (Richard Johnson, R. Mason), Verse En Coma (Jeff Kane), Battletorn (Omid), and Last Black Chapter (R. Mason). Also, the original bassist from Pg.99 was in the band on vocals for a time. (taken from LastFM)
Track List:
1. Introduction
2. Lost
3. Hypocrisy
4. Facade
5. Enough
6. Evolution
7. Sentencing
8. Clone
9. Combustion
10. Glasshead
11. Obey
Live at Fiesta Grande #5
12. The Weatherman
13. Group Think
14. Small Man, Big Mouth (Minor Threat)
15. Solemn Witness
16. Sentencing
Top notch grindcore out of Virginia! This is the CD version Clean Plate Records put out that includes the "Live at Fiesta Grande #5" flexi. "The Ruins Of Eden" was originally released as a 10" on the German label Insolito Records also in 97'.
Enemy Soil started out as a drum machine grind band and then added a real drummer not long before they headed out to the West Coast to play Fiesta Grande #5 fest. put on by Slap A Ham Records. The band called it quits in the spring of 99' and members went on to form or join other powerhouse units mentioned above.
Not alot of information floating around about Enemy Soil, you can go here and see their out put. I was a big fan of this band and have a good deal of their records except for the split 7" w/Wadge, live in Virginia 7", a few split tapes and the double disc discography titled "Smashes The State!" that Bones Brigade Records put out not long ago. This is killer grindcore!

J.B Beverley and The Wayward Drifters - Watch America Roll By (2009)
2009 - Watch America Roll By
It’s a time-honored tradition: the life-on-the-road sophomore album. And with the title of Watch America Roll By, J.B. Beverley and the Wayward Drifters willingly stand by tradition on Album Number Two; fortunately, Beverley’s worldview is broader than that of his tour van. Guitarist Beverley (ex-Murder Junkies!) and the Drifters (banjo/dobro/mandolinist Dan Mazer and upright bassist Johnny Lawless) may be all over the literal map—hitting the highway on jaunty opener “Interstate Blues”, hanging out with a hobo on “Gonna Ride a Train”, and making like Reverend Horton Heat’s kid brother on “Drug Train”—but these peripatetic souls know exactly how they want to get wherever it is they’re going: with plenty of old-school fiddle-and-banjo-soaked honky tonk. Too, the band tosses out the requisite shout-outs to their country forebears Messrs Cash and Williams Sr. either explicitly, as on the title track, or implicitly (“They’ll Only Play My Music When I’m Dead”), as any respectful country band should. Of course, the band pulls off the highway long enough to flip the bird to some women who’ve done Beverley wrong—“I Don’t Give A Damn” (“I’d chop off every finger I got / If it keeps me safe from you”... though presumably he’s keeping one finger intact) and “Thank You For Giving Me The Blues”, before putting the rubber back on the road, cackling all the way. Thank goodness someone remembered that road trips are supposed to be fun. - review by Stephen Haag

God Damn I love this album. I have a feeling that Beverley and the gang will be around longer than many people think. With the current "Traditional Country" revival that's going on right now, these guys are right up front with names like Dale Watson, Wayne Hancock, Hank III and etc.

J.B. Beverley and The Wayward Drifters - 2006 - Dark Bar and a Jukebox
Have you ever wondered what happened to REAL country music? Sadly, it has been pushed into the underground by the image-consumed, money-making monster of the corporate music industry. These days, only a few brave souls dare to make the kind of authentic country music that honors American heritage and culture; rooted in the influence of Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, and the other all-but-forgotten legends of the genre. Genuine country music reflects real life, and not the latest fashion trends. One of the strongest and most charismatic forces in the real country music arena is J.B. Beverley & The Wayward Drifters.
Originally formed in December 1998, J.B. Beverley and the Wayward Drifters have steadily made a name for themselves in the U.S. and around the world. A “retired” hobo, Beverley took his experiences from the road, the trains, and everyday American people he encounters, and molded those experiences into some of the most heartfelt, real-deal country music to see the light of day in a long time. With driving acoustic rhythm guitar, slamming upright bass slapping, amazing banjo rolls, and other blistering accompaniment, Beverley and his “high lonesome” voice have earned a solid reputation for their live shows.
J.B. Beverley and his Wayward Drifters’ endless life on the road is studded with highlights, including a 7 week tour with Hank Williams III and shows with contemporary greats like Wayne “The Train” Hancock, Dale Watson and Lee Rocker. They have been joined on stage by legendary Commander Cody guitar picker Bill Kirchen, and other friends in the music community. The band also has made fans out of the likes of John Carter Cash, Slim Jim Phantom of the Stray Cats, Bruce Springsteen, and Piedmont Blues great Warner Williams.
J.B. Beverley & The Wayward Drifters have been featured on several radio and TV programs, including the MHZ Network's "Spotlight", Austin's Capzeyes TV, and radio shows like Colorado's KRFC "Live at Lunch, and Knoxville's WDVX FM. The band has released two heavily-circulated demos, and a full-length studio CD entitled “Dark Bar & A Jukebox” (Helltrain Records). The band toured relentlessly for over two years in support of "Dark Bar", and also wound up the subject of an upcoming documentary road film by Wayward Souls Productions out of New Mexico.
In 2008, J.B. opened Rebel Roots Studio in Richmond, VA to record and produce "Watch America Roll By", the band's sophomore effort. Described as "an organic road record that may as well have soil falling off it's roots", the new CD is stirring up quite the buzz amongst Wayward Drifters fans and roots-music enthusiasts alike. - taken from their Myspace
Track Listing:
1.Shoulda' Thought About It
2.Dark Bar and a Jukebox
3.Memories of You
4.Before They Get Those Cuffs On Me

8.Drinkin' Bourbon
9.Going to the Show
10.Ghost of Old DC
