Children of a Dead God - 2007 - Baked In Hell

Well, I really don't know much about these guys except that they are from Pennsylvania and I used to talk with them on Myspace.  They have since deleted their account  BUT; I chatted with them everyday for a while and can say that they were cool dudes that loved smoking weed and jamming out.  They recorded this in 2007 and had asked if anyone wanted a copy, I figured since I was pretty much going back and forth talking about sludge and doom metal with them for a while, that I would get one from them.  Sure enough, I gave them my address and a few days later I got this demo in the mail.  It's very very lo-fi stoner improv type stuff but is still worth a listen, especially if you like obscure sludge and doom. I have no idea what ever happened to them, but hopefully they don't mind that I put this up for you all to check out.  Also, when I can, I'll scan the cover art that was hand drawn with black and green sharpie markers for this demo.

2007 - Baked In Hell

Track Listing:

1 -   Intro to Hell
2 -   On the Wings of a Demon
3 -   Pray to Your God
4 -   Same 'ol Shit
5 -   Trippin' in Hell
6 -   Helluva Idea
7 -   Wah Shit
8 -   Did You Hear That?
9 -   Relaxation
10 - Wake 'N Bake
11 - ANNIHLATED
12 - Trippin' in Hell pt. 2
13 - It's all your Fault

I know this may not appeal to everyone but, I was digging through a box of demos and stuff the other day and found this so I figured I'd share.  These guys were constantly online trying to spread this around so why not help them out, right?

This album was recorded as a break from the Resurgence trilogy but I really don't know much else about it. It has a garagey feel to it and it's disjointed and all over the place but besides that it's got some pretty amazing music. This album is just... out of this world... scary as all hell.. this is real...

Vrolok is one of my favorite USBM bands. He (D) mixes occult satanic ritual black metal with psychedelic elements to create an unnerving and horrific atmosphere. This album is pretty much incredible so make sure to check it out. For fans of Vomit Orchestra, Black Funeral, Sangraal and Abaddon.

Chopsley - 2000 - 4 song Demo

Chopsley formed in late 1999 and was supposed to be a "joke grindcore band with breakdowns." It became a joke band that we all took a little too seriously and subsequently broke up after only nine months. The original line-up consisted of Steve W. (Head Pro, Dear Diary I Seem to Be Dead, A Hunger Artist, Secret Passage), Andy (Head Pro, The Ghostwood), Eddie (Eat a Bag of Dicks, The Interview), Steve S. (Mad Cow Crisis, Morality Dictates, Eat a Bag of Dicks), and Bryan (Morality Dictates, Eat a Bag of Dicks, Dear Diary I Seem to Be Dead, Thou). We only played a handful of shows, but most of them were with some amazing bands (Zao, Zegota, At the Drive-In, Atom & His Package, Casket Lottery) and we were also scheduled to play with some big bands whose tours fell apart (Incantation, The Varukers, From Ashes Rise, Strong Intention). Chopsley formed a bond early on with fellow local band Hatchback which probably led to Chuck playing bass for Head Pro, Eric coming on the Head Pro tour, and the eventual creation of Dear Diary I Seem to Be Dead. At one point, we had scheduled a week or two of touring with Hatchback, but it was canceled when the first couple of weeks of their tour ended in disaster, and we couldn't get all of the dates on our end booked solid. We did have a show scheduled for Atlanta with Social Infestation and Otophobia. We probably should've gone up for that one.

The weekend before we were supposed to record all of our songs, we broke up. Only these four demos survived. They were recorded by James Whitten and Greg Stein sometime in early 2000. - taken from Bryan's post found HERE

Track Listing:

1 - We Broke Your Bass
2 - Uptown Straightedge Ninjas
3 - Rectal Anarchy in the UK
4 - Monster X is Back

I managed to catch these guys live one time in their short existence.  I had actually forgot all about them until I got in touch with Bryan.  If you happened to check out the Eat a Bag of Dicks stuff that I posted, be sure to check this out as well.

Big thanks to Bryan for this!!

Also, Recently, Chopsley reformed with all the original members except for Eddie (who lives in Oakland, California these days) and with the addition of longtime Chopsley adversary Scott (Head Pro, Secret Passage). Soon after practices began, Andy decided to quit the band and move out to Mountainview, California and was replaced by Chopsley side member Eric (Calvin & the Snobbes, Hatchback, PROMIS, Eat a Bag of Dicks, Dear Diary, Red Beards, Rougarou, Secret Passage, etc.). A few shows have been played, more are in the works, and an LP is being written.

Exhorder - 1986 - Get Rude Demo

1986 - Get Rude (Demo)

Lineup:
Kyle Thomas - vocals
Vinnie Labella - guitar
David Main - guitar
Andy Villaferra - bass
Chris Nail - drums

Track Listing:

1.Bestial Noise/Wake the Dead
2.Ripping Flesh
3.Unforgiven
4.Legions of Death
5.Exhorder
6.Anal Lust

This is the first demo by legendary Louisiana thrash/groove masters Exhorder.

Exhorder are often said to have created the groove-oriented thrash metal sound that was copied and popularized by Pantera. The band is either more or less indifferent to such sentiment as they were friends with Pantera and were saddened by the passing of Dimebag Darrell. However, they do not deny the possibility of them having influenced Pantera's sound even though Kyle Thomas has stated Pantera deserves the praise they receive as he feels Pantera always worked much harder than Exhorder ever did at being successful. - taken from the M-A page

These guys have always been one of my favorites, if you do not know who they are, I suggest you check them out here

This album is just fantastic and one of the earliest examples of post black metal that I can think of. It may take a little time and effort and concentration to find out what this album is all about, but it certainly is worth it. The continuation of this band with a bit of modernization and less metal can be found in the band called "Virus" which will indeed remind you of VBE. I'll post up some Virus later, but for right now, do me a favor and enjoy the hell out of this masterpiece.

Eat a Bag of Dicks - Kissing Croations and Tour EP

2002 and / or 2003? Kissing Croations EP  and Tour Demo

Before I give you the track listings, let me just say that I have nothing but the absolute greatest memories from these guys.  I went to probably damn near every show that they played here in New Orleans.  I had lost this a looooong time ago, and I was extremley pissed off at myself for doing so, mainly because I new it would be damn near impossible to ever hear this stuff again.  I called a bunch of old friends, dug through cd bins at pawn shops, and drove myself and my wife crazy in the process of tracking this down.  After weeks and months of digging, calling, and looking, something great happened.  I found a CD-R copy that I had stashed away in a box of stuff at my mothers' house.  Unfortunately, it looked like someone tried to clean the cd with a piece of sandpaper.  Back to square one.  I started calling, emailing, and all that stuff again.  Then, a miracle happened.  I got in touch with an old friend named Bryan.  Some of you may know him by a band called "Thou".  Some people hated him, but we used to jokingly call him "The Godfather", mostly because the way we saw things, he was pretty much the biggest reason that New Orleans had any type of Punk/Hardcore scene.  He was, at that time, one of the hardest working fuckers in the city.  Obviously a few years didn't change things much, as he is still working his ass off with his current projects.  After talking through a few emails back and forth, he saves the fucking day! He emailed me both EP's ,with song titles too!

Now, a little about the band:

Eat a Bag of Dicks were CRAZY!  At one time there were probably literally 15 vocalists. Think punk influenced grind for alcoholics and raging lunatics.  Actually, just listen to it. Make your own judgment.  If any of you do not like it, I don't care.  I just figured I'd share my personal Holiday miracle with all of you.

Track Listing:

1  -  Stormseeker - The Source of my Power
2  -  I'm In Love with a coffee & company girl
3  -  The Massive Hug Rules the Mosh Pit
4  -  Soundman! Your Hatred is Tangeable
5  -  I have a fever and the only prescription is more cowbell
6  -  Same Old Shit
7  -  Undone (The Robinsons' Song)
8  -  10 O'clock in the morning (I'm gonna fuck your ass)
9  -  This is for Dave, you fired Dave, I always liked Dave
10-  Dan Fox pierced his scrotum for the Saints
11-  Wrastlin' is for morons, retards, and stupid bitches
12-  The Day everyone ran out to buy American flag paraphernalia for every day of the week.
13-  Come wit it now, crowd, give me an "I" and follow that up with an Njustice

Seriously, this made my day.

Lightning Bolt - Wonderful Rainbow

Thunder Bolt is a Noise Rock duo from Providence Rhode Island. Their sound is rather unique, it's almost completely focused on the drumming, and the drummer is fantastic.

I was just recently introduced to this band, so I honestly can't say much about them, other than that they're definitely worth a listen. If you like stuff along the lines of Melt-Banana, you'll love this.

Also, a huge thanks to Skaven from Metal Throne for the recommendation!

Tracklist:

  1. "Hello Morning" – 0:55
  2. "Assassins" – 3:43

Track Listing:

2Electric Funeral
3Children of the Grave
4Fairies Wear Boots
5A National Acrobat
6Wicked World
7Into The Void
8Iron Man

Afroskull is greasy persuasion and bad gris-gris. A New York City funk/rock collective by way of New Orleans, the ‘Skull is a sonic gumbo that is one part Funkadelic and one part Black Sabbath with generous helpings of Zappaesque runs and jazzoid horns. The interplay of their heady musicianship, simmering hyper kinetics and fat bottomed grooves helps to keep les bon temps rouler all night long.
  - taken from their Myspace

This is the infamous AfroSabbath show, recorded live at the Mermaid Lounge in New Orleans in 2001.  This somewhat official bootleg recording was released by Secret Ninja Records in 2005 but has long been out of print.  I was lucky enough to receive this from a friend a few years back.  Check it out!

Lost Life is a German project that plays intense black metal with an almost punk/grunge type of style. Sometimes they remind me of Nirvana mixed with a band like Burzum, an interesting blend, indeed. Lost Life does it really well, too. They will have quiet moments that will just explode into a ferocious onslaught. I expect a lot of good things from this great band.

Egypt - 2007 - Egypt EP

2007 - Egypt EP

Genre(s)
Stoner/Doom Metal
Origin
United States of America (Fargo, North Dakota)
Last known line-up
Aaron Esterby - vocals & electric bass
Chad Heille - percussion
Ryan Grahn - electric guitar

Track Listing:

Remasterd by James Plotkin (Khanate, O.L.D., etc.)
1.Valley Of The Kings
2.Queen Of All Time (Red Giant)
3.Dirty Witch
4.Touch Ground
5. Valley of the Kings (live)

It’s a little hard to dig up information regarding Egypt.  All I know is that this trio hailed from Fargo, ND and that they were the only band playing that style (stoner/doom) in the area. Lyderhorn Records have taken on the task of having James Plotkin (Khanate, OLD) remaster the only four songs (from a demo) Egypt ever recorded and release them in vinyl. The result is great. The guitar is super chunky and has great punch. It has all come together in a very organic manner that matches up to the band’s obvious ideas. On the third track for instance, Egypt sounds a bit like Bad Company had the guitar slot been filled by Tony Iommi. It’s a long jam of over seven minutes that is about sweaty licks more than heavy bashing.

This is easily one of the most played albums in my collection.  Fans of Kyuss, Suplecs, etc.

Suffer - 2004 - When Darkness Falls

Suffer was forged from the deep swamps of Louisiana, unleashing the intense musical ideas and ambitions brought forth by Tomas Viator (Disincarnate, Acid Bath, Shrum, Astaroth) Kelly Pitre (Shrum, Vual) and Tim Holsinger (Goatwhore, Psycho Scenario). Suffer takes their listeners on a voyage into a cold world where blasphemy reigns supreme, war is never ending and the sound of steel breaking bones echoes for miles. With the unrelenting, powerful drive of Tommy's drums, the demonic rumble of Kelly's bass and the hellish screams and chainsaw guitar riffs of Tim, Suffer brings black metal to new level without losing their old school attitude. Suffer's debut album entitled "When Darkness Falls" was released on Northern Blaze Records June 1st 2004.

2004 - When Darkness Falls

Track Listing:

1.Intro
2.Inside the Womb of Emptiness
3.Plague of the Whore
4.Interlude I
5.Ascending From Ruin
6.Shell of an Angel
7.Interlude II
8.Reign of Darkness
9.Charge of the Dark Goddess
10. Destroying Existence

Big thanks to DEVILDOWNINGA for this one.  I hadn't heard this in a while.

Dr. John - 2001 - Creole Moon

2001 - Creole Moon

Rhythm reigns supreme on Creole Moon, which cuts a sinuous, syncopated groove through the various styles that have informed the good Doctor's career. The bayou funk of "Bruha Bembe" recalls the juju mysteries of Dr. John's "Night Tripper" phase and the album-opening "You Swore" adheres to the hip-shaking tradition of "Right Place, Wrong Time," while the jazzier sophistication of "Holdin' Pattern," "Queen of Cold," and the title track show how far he has extended his musical terrain. Among the highlights are four songs cowritten with the late Doc Pomus, including the soulful balladry of "Imitation of Love." Guitarist Sonny Landreth and fiddler Michael Doucet contribute Cajun seasoning to this musical gumbo, while saxophonist David "Fathead" Newman and trombonist Fred Wesley provide stellar brass support. --Don McLeese

Track Listing:

 1. You Swore
2. In The Name Of You
3. Food For Thot
4. Holdin' Pattern
5. Bruha Bembe
6. Imitation Of Love
7. Now That You Got Me
8. Creole Moon
9. Georgianna
10. Monkey And Baboon
11. Take What I Can Get
12. Queen Of Cold
13. Litenin'
14. One 2 A.M. Too Many

I'm still planning on posting all of Dr. Johns material but I had to skip a few years to post this particular album up.  I listen to this all the time, and somehow never get tired of it.  This is another record that just bleeds New Orleans.  Check it out!

Witchmaster are a band with the same members as Profanum but the similarities stop there. There's no classical atmospheric black metal here. This is fast perveted Satanic thrash in it's ugliest form. This is a classic in my book.

Gaurithoth - Satanic Perverse Black Latex Metal (demo, 1998)

Genre: Black Metal
Lyrical Themes: Antichristian, Blasphemy, Perversions, Satan
Origin: Finland (Mikkeli)
Formed: 1997
Status: Split up

3. Vomit Covers the Face of God 3:22
4. Leather Helmet of Satan's Bitch 4:00

7. Journey to Halls of Whipped Flesh 4:20
8. Disgraced Will holy Souls Be 6:02
Total playing time
35:18

Today I am gonna explore the more perverted side of black metal. I have at least 3 albums in mind that deal in slave whipping S&M type stuff. The first is Gaurithoth who were pretty unknown but put out some great music in the vein of Horna with more chanting type choruses. The vocalist yells out maniacal rasps complemented with melodic and evil guitar work. It's truly good stuff.

Dr. John - 1978 - City Lights

1978 - City Lights

Track Listing:

1. Dance The Night Away With You
2. Street Side
3. Wild Honey
4. Rain
5. Snake Eyes
6. Fire Of Love
7. Sonata/He's a Hero
8. City Lights

City Lights is arguably one of Dr. John's most overlooked recordings, which is hard to imagine as the quality of session players are the crème de la crème of the then New York City recording scene. On drums is the great Steve Gadd, co-producer Hugh McCracken on guitar, guitarist John Tropea (whose credits include superlative work with Deodato, as well as his own solo efforts), bassist Will Lee certainly needs no introduction, and the sorely missed Richard Tee on keyboards. The horn section features Ronnie Cuber and David Sanborn, who takes several solos throughout, and background vocalists George Jones, Tammy Lynn, and Alvin Robinson shine. Man, why don't they make records like this anymore? This fine album is kind of New York City meets the Big Easy; sumptuously funky, somewhat slick, but superbly tight. LiPuma's top-notch production values never interfere with the artistic intent and Dr. John fits the groove like a glove. Dr. John is totally in charge and teaches his New York City session playing pupils multiple Crescent City tricks.

Eight songs are included, each and everyone written by Dr. John, one co-written by Bobby Charles ("Wild Honey"), another co-authored by Alvin Robinson ("Fire of Love"), and three by Dr. John and his old buddy and New York City roommate, the legendary Doc Pomus. The many highlights include the opening Pomus/Rebenack "Dance the Night Away With You" with its second-line horn section firmly in place. On Dr. John's "Street Side" we get to hear Dr. John and Tee blend keyboards to perfection, as they never get in each other's way and man does Sanborn wail on this one, plus Will Lee and Gadd just punch the groove! "Wild Honey" is right in the pocket too; listen to Will Lee kick the bottom in the pants from beginning to end on this extremely funky affair, where the background vocalists ever so slightly add so much to the roux. Even Claus Ogerman's gorgeous strings lay a perfect backdrop to Dr. John's "Rain" where Sanborn once again sets sail. "Snake Eyes" is near brilliant, with it's reptile-like twists and turns, fueled by the Dr.'s excellent vocals and lyric, plus John Tropea's guitar solo is the precise vehicle that builds this outstanding track to its final intensity, as well as Dr. John's and McCraken's smart horn arrangements. "Fire of Love," co-written by Alvin Robinson, definitely could have easily been covered by the group Stuff, mainly due to the presence of keyboardist Richard Tee, as it has that classic band sound and feel. The last two tracks are co-authored by the two Doc's (Pomus and John). The first one, "Sonata" (where Dr. John's piano introduces the theme) segues into "He's a Hero." Once again check out the nifty horn charts and the tight rhythm section. Dr. John takes this one out (similarly as the "Sonata" intro) with a cool piano solo and duets with one of the horn players; it's an extremely tasty segment. The finale and title track is a ballad that is introduced by Ogerman's strings, Dr. John's fine vocals, Tropea's sweet guitar licks, and Tee's signature keyboards.

Overlooked Classic

Orthodox- Gran Poder

Genre- Doom Metal
Lyrical theme(s)- South-Spanish Religious Folklore, Oppression, Sin
Origin- Spain

Marco Serrato Gallardo - Bass, vocals
Ricardo Jimenez Gómez - Guitar
Borja Diaz Vera - Drums

Orthodox are a recent doom metal band mixing influences from more than a few various sources. This is their debut, Gran Poder, and it's a straight-up Doom Metal album, yet it contains influences from almost every genre imaginable, from Jazz to Ambient. It can get repetitive, but that adds to the effect the album achieves (a mystical drone feeling) rather than detracting from it. In other words, it's a great album for LSD. The vocals are scattered throughout the album, and they have a shit-ton of vibrato on them, almost to the point of yodeling (as gay as it may sound, they sound good). Heavy as Hell guitar tone, and a raw drum sound also contribute to the overall performance of this unique album.

But this album really desrves a listen, It's a perfect mixture of glorious epic evil riffs mixed with the dirty satanic ancient sounding black metal. This guitarwork is simply evil as all hell. Give this album a listen, holy shit...

Unholy Grave - collection

So it's been a while since I posted something, mostly because things have been a little hectic starting in November, so to make up for it I bring you my entire collection of Unholy Grave. Mass Separation & Unholy Grave split CD (1998)

Skerik's Syncopated Taint Septet - 2006 - Husky

2006 - Husky

Husky is a studio album by Skerik's Syncopated Taint Septet released 2006. It was recorded at the Sound Factory in Los Angeles, California March 2004. Much of the recording is first takes. Skerik talks about recording the album:

"For me, Husky is that rare combination of everything lining up perfectly at the right time. You're lucky if you get one of these in a lifetime. The band had been on the road touring, so we knew the music inside out. We had a day off in Los Angeles, so we went into The Sound Factory, which is a one-of-a-kind studio out there and cut the entire record that day."

Musicians:

    * Craig Flory - baritone saxophone and clarinet
    * Hans Teuber - alto saxophone, flute
    * Steve Moore - trombone, Wurlitzer electric piano
    * Joe Doria - Hammond organ
    * Dave Carter - trumpet
    * Skerik - tenor and baritone saxophone
    * John Wicks - drums
    * Isalee Teuber - vocal on "Daddy Won't Taint Bye-Bye"

Track Listing:

   1. "The Third Rail"
   2. "Go to Hell, Mr Bush"
   3. "Syncopate the Taint"
   4. "Fry His Ass"
   5. "Don't Wanna"
   6. "Song for Bad"
   7. "Taming the Shrew"
   8. "Irritaint"
   9. "Summer Pudding"
  10. "Daddy Won't Taint Bye-Bye"

As I said in earlier posts, I am a Skerik fanatic.  I've seen the guy live with many other musicians and it's always great.  This is another one of my favorite albums of all time so, I figured I'd share.  Check this shit out!

Fry His Ass

Also, I may not be posting much / or, at all this week because I'm having surgery tomorrow morning.  I'm sure Kur and the gang will keep things interesting here.

Now go listen to the Taint!

Through The Pain- Time Heals Nothing

Genre: Black Metal
Lyrical Themes: Personal Advancement & Experiences through Pain
Country: Germany
Year: recorded in 2008, released in 2009

Lineup:
Baelvect - Vocals, Guitar
Wiedergaenger - Bass
R. - Drums(session)

Suicidal Black Metal has been creating quite a stir recently within the black metal scene. It's basically one of the many offsprings of Burzum, but on the complete opposite side of NSBM. Through the Pain is yet another suicidal black metal band, and they bring hardly anything new to the table except for executing a depressive atmosphere perfectly. This is how Suicidal Black Metal should be: Relaxing, slow, worn-out screechy vocals a la Varg Vikernes, and just a feeling of despair that leaves you breathless, and sucks the happiness right out of you.

Cyanide, anyone?

Young Tuxedo Brass Band - 2007 - Jazz Begins: Sounds of New Orleans Funeral and Parade Music

The Young Tuxedo Brass Band is a brass band from New Orleans, which was influential on the New Orleans jazz scene in the years after World War II.

The Young Tuxedo Brass Band was founded in 1938 by John Casimir. Its name is a nod to the Tuxedo Brass Band of Papa Celestin, an important ensemble active in New Orleans in the 1910s and 1920s. The ensemble generally held between nine and eleven players, with two trumpets, two trombones, two reeds, a sousaphone or tuba, a snare drum, and a bass drum. Their first record was issued in 1958 on Atlantic Records, and featured Paul Barbarin on drums; other personnel included Andy Anderson and John Brunious on trumpet, Clement Tervalon, Eddie Pierson, and Jim Robinson on trombone, reedists Herman Sherman and Andrew Morgan, and drummer Emile Knox.

In 1963 Wilbert Tilman, the group's founding sousaphonist and Casimir's cousin, took control of the group, but retired later that year due to poor health; Andrew Morgan took over until his death in 1972. Following this Herman Sherman became the group's leader until his death in 1984. During Sherman's tenure, they toured the United States and overseas. In 1983, they recorded Jazz Continues, featuring Michael White and drummer Charles Barbarin. Trumpeter Gregg Stafford has led the group since 1984.

Forest of Fog is a one man black metal project from Switzerland, and believe me when I tell you that Ivo can really tear shit up on the guitar. This is mid-paced black metal with a lot of very melodic and memorable parts. Abgründe is Forest of Fog's latest cd and I've been waiting patiently for a new one but I really don't know what's going on with that. In the meantime, I'll also try to post up his other full lengths.

Critters Buggin - 1998 - Bumpa

 1998 - Bumpa

Bumpa is a studio album and live album by Critters Buggin of Seattle, Washington released in 1998. Originally released by Loosegroove, Bumpa was reissued by Kufala Recordings in 2004.

Album Credits:

Matt Chamberlain: drums, percussion, loops, samples, digital editing
Brad Houser: basses, baritone saxophone, Rhodes piano bass
Skerik: tenor, baritone and soprano saxophones, hammond bass, keys, Rhodes piano, analog synth
Mike Dillon: percussion, conga, tabla, vibes

Track Listing:

1.  Fluoride
2.  Brozo the Clone
3.  I Ate Lucy     Listen
4.  Chimp & Ape
5.  Senjara
6.  Raimondi
7.  Bomb Ass Tick
8.  Joe Sard
9.  Trucker Beak
10. Fast Johnson
11. Pedro Lovin'
12. 33     Listen
13. 1 2 3 4
14. Joe Sard (Reprise)

Critters Buggin is a band every (molecular) record-store owner must hate. Where do you file a band that jumps from skronk jazz to dance beats to frenetic turntable scratching? And how do you classify tunes like these when elements of world music--tablas and congas--occasionally kick in? Well, you sit back and enjoy the ride. The Critters Buggin collective--four guys with more than enough horns, samplers, drums, effects pedals, guitars, and energy to go around--traverse the entire musical spectrum on Bumpa, from drum & bass to funk. Some cuts sound like the ROVA Saxophone Quartet gone groovy--really groovy. "Flouride" is a crazed keyboard rock romp, "I Ate Lucy" is almost straight jazz, and "Brozo the Clone" is just tame enough to be labeled as acid jazz. File under: fun. --Jason Verlinde

This is probably my favorite CB album, the first track "Fluoride" is enough to have anybody hooked.  If you enjoyed the other CB albums that I posted, you should love this one.

Ben Nichols - 2009 - The Last Pale Light in the West

The sparse, dark, and aggressive alt-country, bluegrass, and southern rock ballads of The Last Pale Light in the West are guttural poems set to knee slapping fireside guitar riffs. The 7-song CD is a short, but impressive, solo debut for Lucero lead singer Ben Nichols. It is reminiscent of Bruce Springsteen’s 1982 classic Nebraska. A stark recording, the only instruments on The Last Pale Light in the West are guitars, an accordion, a piano, and Nichol’s gruff, engaging voice.
The recording is a soft piece with grim themes. The guitars lead everything, while the pianos and accordions haunt the stories Nichols tells. All the songs are written by Nichols and based on the 1985 Cormac McCarthy novel Blood Meridian: or the Evening Redness in the West. McCarthy’s Meridian is considered by many to be a modern America classic of literature, a gritty western novel about a teenage runaway “the kid,” who joins a gang of scalp hunters who massacre Indians on the U.S.-Mexico border in the 1800s. The story is based on actual events and has been praised for it’s nightmarish beauty and magnificent language. As Nichols translates the novel into brief songs he displays his gift for crafting a story and delivering intricate emotions and settings through brief phrases.
Only one song on The Last Pale Light in the West is longer than five minutes, and the closing song is an instrumental tune. Nichols begins the album with the title song, which sets the theme for the album, telling the story of a remorseless character who is bound to go west. The second song is “The Kid” – a rolling biography of The Kid – a tune that tells of a forgotten child who meets up with the devil.
The lyrics throughout the album work in many of the characters and places from Blood Meridian, and Nichols powerfully sorrowful voice shines through crisply — thanks to engineering by Doug Easley — overtop the soft, or possibly barren and dead with a harsh blood-tinged wind blowing, musical landscape that Nichols and his two partners (Rick Steff on accordian and piano, and Todd Beene on guitar) produce.

Nichols’ minimal lyrics illustrate the bleak musical layout: “Don’t believe in Hell / But he figures somehow / Even if it’s real / It’s gonna spit him back out”; “I done some preachin’ back in Texas before the war / Now I hunt heathens ‘cause it pays better than the Lord / I ride with Demons / The Devil at my side / Be it us or the heathens, we must all pay a heavy price”; “They took my ears in Omaha / Thought me dead but I weren’t at all / Left them bleeding in the mud / Branded me for horse thievery / Between my eyes for all to see / Left them bleeding in the mud / When this world was made / Was never meant to save / Everyone in kind / And I don’t believe / God much had me / Had me much in mind”. His phrasing delivers coldness and despair with pinpoint accuracy.
The Last Pale Light in the West is a gorgeous black and white photo of a homeless man on a cold New York street. Neon lights are around the corner, but the dark alley is the only way to get there, and there is no guarantee that the neon lights will save anybody. Going down the alley is a scary prospect, but there may be no way to stop your momentum, so you sharpen your teeth and challenge the shadows to a duel.

Shrum - 1997 - Red Devils and Purple Ringers

SHRUM was created by Audie T. Pitre in 1995 when he got the idea of putting two bass players together, in order to create a brutal sound. He shared this idea with Tommy Viator and they began creating what was the beginning of SHRUM. They were undecided as to whom they would get to play the second bass position. They asked Joseph J. Fontenot (they knew from a band called Shredding Lettuce) if he would be interested in the concept of a forming a band together with two bassists, drums and vocals. Enter second bassist, Joseph. The only question now was, who could they possibly get to become the vocalist, this would complete the "total package". Audie was a member of Louisiana's most notorious metal band Acid Bath, their singer Dax Riggs was the first one considered for the vocalist position of SHRUM. Dax went to one of the band's jam sessions and worked on a song. A song that would eventually become "Tears Of A Marionette". Dax's melody was perfect for the song but his lyrics just didn't work. Dax lived very far away, from everyone else in the band so it just didn't work out, unfortunately. Scott Leger would listen in on SHRUM's jam sessions. He said that he was a vocalist, but none of the band members had ever heard him. He was asked to try out for the vocalist position in SHRUM. The first practice he came to was very rough, he was trying to mimic Dax and that was definitely not what SHRUM was looking for. "We wanted something original" says Joseph. Audie then told Scott that he should be himself and sing with emotion. With that said, entered the brutal vocal style of Scott Leger Jr. SHRUM was on the verge of playing live shows, when abruptly Audie Pitre's life was taken in an automobile accident, along with his parent's lives. Red Devils and Purple Ringers were released to raise money for Audie Layne (Audie's son). The tape sold extremely well, eventually selling out completely. SHRUM completed it's first show with Kelly Pitre (Audie's little brother) filling in on bass. It was an outdoor block party. The response, and turnout for the event was absolutely unbelievable. After all this time had passed, people were still itching to here SHRUM play live. Since that time SHRUM has played a show at Zeppelins in New Orleans La. with Goatwhore. The show went great, afterward the band gave an interview to New South Metal Magazine. The question was asked "What does the future hold for SHRUM?" the answer was, "The future is wide open." As of right now SHRUM is no longer together, but legacy of Audie, and the SHRUM crew lives on threw their music.
