Mars - Reign of Suns

Mars is a sludge/doom band formed in 2006 from New Orleans.  After many lineup and name changes later, they managed to release this fucking jewel known as "Reign of Suns".  Mars has played shows with Mala Suerte, Coffinworm, Black Tusk, Tombs, The Gates of Slumber, Pentagram, Thou,  and many more.  I featured  a few of their songs on the last compilation that I made for Cheeto and the gang which can be found here and here.

The Mushroom River Band - Music for the World Beyond (2000)

The Mushroom River Band was formed by guitarist Anders Linusson, bass player Alexander "Saso" Sekulovski and drummer Andreas Grafenauer in 1996. This line-up recorded one demo tape with Christian "Spice" Sjöstrand from Spiritual Beggars as a guest vocalist. This demo was produced in small numbers and the band broke up as members went in different directions. In 1997, Linusson and Sekulovski decided to reform the band and recruited 16 year old Chris Rockström on drums. Spice joined as a full time singer (while still being frontman in Spiritual Beggars). In January 1998 the band entered Soundscape Studio in Halmstad to record what would later become the Rocketcrash EP. This EP was released in 1999 on 10" vinyl on the band's own Tea Pot label. Later in 1999 the band recorded a second demo entitled the No Quarter Recordings. These recordings led to the band landing gigs outside their local region, but performing became increasingly difficult as Spice attempted to juggle duties in both The Mushroom River Band and Spiritual Beggars. In 2000 the band signed to MeteorCity and released their first full length album, Music for the World Beyond, the same year. Following this album the band performed only a few shows, again due to Spice's engagement in Spritiual Beggars. However, in 2001 the band went out on their first European tour in support of the album. Later in the year Spice left Spiritual Beggars to concentrate solely on The Mushroom River Band. The band's second and final album, Simsalabim, was released in 2002. Following the recording of this album Rockström left the band. Robert Hansson was recruited to fill in on drums for the ensuing European tour. After the tour The Mushroom River Band was put on hiatus and the following year Spice left the band. The band decided to break up in 2004.

Egypt - 2007 - Egypt EP

2007 - Egypt EP

Genre(s)
Stoner/Doom Metal
Origin
United States of America (Fargo, North Dakota)
Last known line-up
Aaron Esterby - vocals & electric bass
Chad Heille - percussion
Ryan Grahn - electric guitar

Track Listing:

Remasterd by James Plotkin (Khanate, O.L.D., etc.)
1.Valley Of The Kings
2.Queen Of All Time (Red Giant)
3.Dirty Witch
4.Touch Ground
5. Valley of the Kings (live)

It’s a little hard to dig up information regarding Egypt.  All I know is that this trio hailed from Fargo, ND and that they were the only band playing that style (stoner/doom) in the area. Lyderhorn Records have taken on the task of having James Plotkin (Khanate, OLD) remaster the only four songs (from a demo) Egypt ever recorded and release them in vinyl. The result is great. The guitar is super chunky and has great punch. It has all come together in a very organic manner that matches up to the band’s obvious ideas. On the third track for instance, Egypt sounds a bit like Bad Company had the guitar slot been filled by Tony Iommi. It’s a long jam of over seven minutes that is about sweaty licks more than heavy bashing.

This is easily one of the most played albums in my collection.  Fans of Kyuss, Suplecs, etc.

Ketea - 2009 - Alpha

Genre(s)
Sludge/Doom Metal
Origin
United States of America (Shreveport, Louisiana)
Current Label
Doom Dealer/The Church Within
Current line-up
Emily - Guitar, Vocals
Lonnie - Bass, Vocals, Samples
Trey - Drums

Shreveport, Louisiana is a good ways north and west of the fabled New Orleans, and likewise, Ketea offer a sound north and west of fabled Nola acts like EyeHateGod, Suplecs, Mystick Krewe of Clearlight and Crowbar. Their emphasis, both musically and vocally, is on dynamics – each of the six songs on their Doom Dealer/The Church Within debut, Alpha, features finely honed changes that come in so hard they’ll crack your sheetrock and go out so smooth they’ll caulk it back up. Good for outdoor listening, I suppose.

Tonally similar to Zoroaster’s Dog Magic and mixed so the thick, hairy (which would have to be the next step up from fuzzy, right?) guitars and bass are primary considerations when listening, the sample-laden Alpha demonstrates its creators’ thoughtfulness in a variety of ways apart from the ease of transitions. All six tracks begin with the same letter as the album title, for example, and the songs are arranged so that “A Bomb a Nation,” the longest of the bunch, comes at the end of the vinyl’s side A. These may be small touches, but they show Ketea are putting real thought into their work, they’re passionate about it, where many bands just record songs, throw them together and call it a record.

What Alpha does exceedingly well is pull the listener into it and shove them out again. The trio – guitarist/vocalist Emily, bassist/vocalist Lonnie and drummer Trey – immediately set about modal deconstruction with opener “Alchemystery,” which begins with Acid King-style (if less confident) clean vocals from Emily before smashing Lonnie’s screams into the eardrum at 6:12. The interlude following the solo at 4:29 that leads into that segment helps set the range and overall mood of the album.

The more bass-driven “Affect the Hive” is the shortest and maybe the screamiest of the songs, with high-low growls and cackles playing off each other over a punishing guitar line, and the aforementioned “A Bomb a Nation,” finds Emily’s vocals more present in the mix, better sounding for it and accompanied by some Mastodonish rhythmic screaming. Side A ends quietly and side B, like the album itself, starts with a sample in “Apochrypha.” The more droned-out riffing, Kylesa-esque simultaneous vocal attack from Emily and Lonnie, insistent drumming from Trey and accordingly careful timing in the guitar provides further evidence that Ketea’s approach is well but not overly considered. They sound like their songwriting is a priority, but also that it is unforced.

“Andromeda” is the most sample-heavy of the songs, with some screams thrown in to keep things moving. What the samples are talking about I’m not sure because they’re partially buried under the music, but there’s a bit about the Kraken, which isn’t surprising given the band’s beast-of-the-sea moniker (the Cetea were water-bound monsters in Greek mythology). Closer “Above All” may not be the longest track on Alpha, but it is imbued with a sense of totality, be it because of the title or the massiveness of the riff around which it is centered and revolving. A longer interlude with dreamy guitar noises and echoes (cut off at 3:09) underscores once again that Ketea’s strength is in being able to switch between all-out brown note doom and quieter moments. The memorable guitar line soon makes its exit into about a two-minute feedback outro.

There are times when listening to Alpha feels like being picked up and put back down, but the organic sound of the band and the decided lack of awkwardness in their switching from one to the other is enough to make them stand out among their doomed peers in today’s crowded scene. They’re worth watching to see what they do down the line, but don’t let that stop you from missing them now either. Really dug this one.

2. affect the hive
3. a bomb a nation
4. apochrypha

6. above all

Ketea are fucking AWESOME.  I had searched all over trying to get my hands on this,  especially since Shreveport is at the very top of Louisiana, it's not like I could have just bought it from a show.  I finally found it at The Mushroom in New Orleans, and I was super excited.  These guys (and girl) are vicious!!  I had only heard two or three songs from their Myspace over a year ago and I had my mind set on getting this.  With all the elements of the NOLA sludge legends, Ketea took that sound and added their elements of progression.  It was like the cherry on the sundae, or the jelly for your moldy peanut butter sandwich.

As far as I know this is an exclusive Nola 504 and More download, I emailed Trey as soon as I returned home the record shop and asked if they minded if I put this up for all of you to hear,  and they gave me their blessing.  So with that said, I'm sure this will spread like wildfire because they are that damn good!!

Enjoy!  - swampchode

Spickle

Spickle is an all original, 4-piece instrumental band from Uptown New Orleans, Louisiana. What began as a time-killer in between another band's practices, Spickle became exactly what Gregg, Paul Kenny and Bret needed; an outlet to release pressure, a palette to be creative, a great way to kill time and another reason to keep waking up.

Here's what some people outside of New Orleans had to say:

SPICKLE "Self Titled" Review Stonerrock.com
This just whips my ass right into shape! Holy crap! (check out the MP3 of the day)...
You can probably tell I like it.
If you haven't heard Spickle before, now is a good time. They are tighter than ever and this pre-release CD is good evidence that there will always be room in StonerRock for bands of the instrumental variety:) These guys are right up there with Karma to Burn and Clearlight as far as musicianship and tightness goes.
This CD travels a lot from fast furious jazzy changes to straight ahead killer road rock with plenty of impressive guitar lead work. The whole rhythm section works like a well oiled machine and are sure to be superior in the live show category.
If you like a band that just jams and does plenty of unique math twists without confusing the listener, then this is the CD for you. It fits right in there with Karma To Burn and Clearlight, check it out for the sake of rock, even if instrumental isn't your thing, you might find this interesting enough to change your mind.
Rob Wrong

Spickle " The Right to Remain Silent" review on Cosmiclava.com
The city of New Orleans is still a good ground for exciting and unique bands. This time it's SPICKLE.
After the self-titled EP, they've banned twelve tracks on the new album, released in 2002. SPICKLE's instrumental music sends the listener to a lot of varied moods and feelings. The musicians are playing amazingly tight in everything they do, from the softer jazzy parts to the whirlwind-like explosive moments. Different dynamics are playing a big role in the music. But let me pick out a few single songs, to show the immense variety of this fascinating album. Spastic Orion" or "2-3= -fun" are more direct rock tunes with hardcore undertones and not only this time, Karma To Burn are coming to mind. But as in "Valve Cover", that starts like 6t's psych tune with a somehow beautiful strange atmosphere and turns into a heavy riff-driven explosion, KTB-like, but from the whole song structure it's very different to them.

Even the quieter moments of SPICKLE, there's still a lot of energy under the peaceful surface. A song as "Bread Puddin" is a cleaver mixture between 7t's Jazzrock and complex heaviness, while "Backbreak" or "It's a nice Day to Die" is more Blues-influenced. What makes SPICKLE so amazing for me, is their impressive and creative way of combining very different musical elements to one refreshing and energetic unit. There's Jazz, Heavy Rock, Hardcore and more, so be open-minded for the SPICKLE experience. (KK)

Kamchatka - 2005 - Kamchatka

Kamchatka are a Swedish power trio highly influenced by late 1960s and early 1970s blues-rock bands. Their sound combines elements of blues-rock, stoner rock and psychedelic rock.
Kamchatka took their name from the volcanically active Russian Kamchatka Peninsula that divides the Okhotsk and the Bering Sea.

Hazard County Girls - 2006 - Divine Armor

 2006 - Divine Armor

The group started as a duo. Drummer Sharon Heather and guitarist/singer Christy Kane had an albums worth of songs in a matter of months, but no bass player could be found. The asked their friend Sean Yseult of White Zombie to stand in until they could find a permanent member. Sean not only stood in, but she contributed bass lines for a few of the songs Christy and Sharon had written, and eventually recorded their first demo with them. Next on bass was Katie Cambell who fate would take from the land of Hazard County after a few short months when she was recruited to join Nashville Pussy. Weeks later, the HCG's found a permanent member in Jennifer K. In May 2002, the HCG's played their first show with Jennifer K. Since then they have been touring all over the US, gaining fans and defining their sound. The first album "Never No More" was recorded in 2002, and was produced by non other than Daniel Rey (Ramones, Misfits, White Zombie).

Their heavy touring schedule caught the attention of Rasputina and the HCG's joined them as their opener on three different occasions. Providing they could reach a variety of audiences the HCG's then did a national tour with Hank Williams III and his metal band Assjack. The response was immediate and enabled the girls to get back in the studio to record their greatly anticipated follow up album, "Divine Armor".

Recorded in July of 2005 with producer Grant Curry, "Divine Armor" has truly captured the HCG's diverse sound. The album was self released by HCG's on their own label, Rev'd Up Records, on May 2nd. Crustacean Records began talking to Hazard County Girls this summer and in November look for the Crustacean reissue of Divine Armor to be distributed by Carrot Top, Electric Fetus and Sonic Rendezvous.

The day of the heavy metal trio returns with Hazard County Girls, the guitar-bass-drums ensemble from New Orleans. Taking as their inspiration Blue Cheer and Black Sabbath, singer/guitarist Christy Kane, bassist Jennifer K., and drummer Sharon Heather play heavy rock with loud, distorted riffs and pummeling beats. . . each song is a sonic assault.  Billboard.com William Ruhlmann

A marvelously dark and brooding serving of hardcore Gothic gloom-doom rock moodiness, done with a real skill and sense of incendiary emotion that's truly something to hear. Joe W. Jersey Beat

Don't expect some Daisy Duke, coquettish behavior from New Orleans' Hazard County Girls. While this three-piece may be pleasing to the eye, the music they make is considerably grittier. Divine Armor is a solid slice of rock from New Orleans.  John Pegoraro  Stonerrock.com

The Hazard County Girls pack a decent wallop on their second album. Stomping out of Louisiana with a full arsenal of lumbering riffs and the kind of heavy downbeats that end arguments fast. Whitney Strub  Pop Matters

Sludgariffic classic stoner shit packs a punch – in a slow, thick, Aunt Jemima-syrup type o' way – while smooth, breathy female vocals falling somewhere between Kim Deal/Gordon seduce you into a helpless swoon.
