This is the first demo by legendary Louisiana thrash/groove masters Exhorder.

Exhorder are often said to have created the groove-oriented thrash metal sound that was copied and popularized by Pantera. The band is either more or less indifferent to such sentiment as they were friends with Pantera and were saddened by the passing of Dimebag Darrell. However, they do not deny the possibility of them having influenced Pantera's sound even though Kyle Thomas has stated Pantera deserves the praise they receive as he feels Pantera always worked much harder than Exhorder ever did at being successful. - taken from the M-A page

Well, this was quite a surprise. With such a stupid name, how can one not listen to it? Well, this is one of the only Groove/Thrash bands I've heard do the genre right. The production here really stands out. It suits the music perfectly, and it's heavy as all Hell. Sounds like Pantera a bit, except that it doesn't suck. Southern Groove/Thrash done right, to sum it up.

  Could there be a bigger monster guitar player out there than Dallas-native Lance Lopez? The guy plays gargantuan heavy Hendrix riffs that rip the cover right off the speaker. He destroys his axe, be it a flying “V”, “SG” or a Les Paul “Custom”. Here’s a guy that should be talked about in the same breath as Joe Bonamassa, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Eric Gales. His six-string wizardry is primarily blues-based but there is plenty of funk, rock and metal in the mix. Hailing from Texas gives him a handle on the ‘Stevie Ray Vaughan’ shuffle heard in “Drinkin’ My Blues” and the hard driving “Thunderbird South.” Both pay homage to ‘the man’ but there’s enough of the Lopez signature aggression that keeps it original – giving respect without duplicating. Being from the Lone Star state also allows him to partner up with some of the area’s hotshot players. On this, his fourth disc, Lopez cuts saw with guest guitarists Wes Jeans and Phillip Brown where they trade licks on such blistering numbers as “Hard Livin”, “Everytime I Turn Around” and the scorching Mississippi Fred McDowell track “Kool Iron Bed.”

The disc takes its name from the Stevie Wonder hit “Higher Ground”. Lopez uses the song as his lead in track, which springs to action with a thick funky beat and finds the Hendrix soul to a signature R&B classic. The Funkadelic inspiration continues through “That’s A Fact” with a hot lead and lots of metallic muscle. Lopez augments his voice from his usual baritone gruffness to pulsed electronic fuzz then launches into Willie Dixon’s “Let Me Love You” with hard rock blues. His love affair with roots blues is very much at home in the 12-bar “Hard Livin” complete with juke joint piano. Among the many hair-raising tracks “El Paso Sugar” steals the show with its ZZ Top sting and some clever Elmore James slide. For a self-produced, self-played record Higher Ground has a remarkably beefy production. It allows the artist to pull out all the stops and work a Commodores spin on “Type of Girl” with a Bootsy Collins strut into “Every Dog Has It’s Day.” Strictly for fans of lead-foot guitar with no brakes. - Todd K. Slow Southern Steel - Preview Trailer

Coming in 2010: One of the most comprehensive southern metal documentaries in history! Appropriately dubbed SLOW SOUTHERN STEEL, the 80+ minute film is executive produced by Karim Khan (I'M BETTER THAN EVERYONE RECORDS) and directed by Rwake vocalist CT and David Lipke with the additional and integral assistance of George Hancock, Alix Petrovich and Beer Wolf guitarist Christian Sweeney (who will be releasing a paperback version of the production) among many others.
SLOW SOUTHERN STEEL peers into the world of true southern metal/doom through live footage and personal interviews; CT's devout commitment/knowledge/love of the topic at hand bringing the movie to life in a way few first-time directors can. Said CT about the laborious undertaking: "I knew there were things I could get out of these bands that other film makers could not." Added Khan, "There's just something very appealing to me about taking unyielding heavy songs and adding a strong southern element to them."

So, I'd never heard of this band, but happened across it at a used CD store, and with the price being less than .75 cents, the label being one that I've had other releases from, and the cover artwork being fairly strange I thought, eh, fuck it, I'm going to pick this up. I'm glad I did.

The first thought that ran through my mind was "Holy shit, it's like Godflesh playing NOLA sludge". While I still get this impression sometimes, the album stands on it's own without the namedropping as well.

So, back to my initial Godflesh / NOLA sludge comment. This definitely has a early 90's southern sludge feel to it, the riffs are certainly influenced by Eyehategod, Crowbar, Down, etc. The vocals also take pretty common sludge characteristics and are of the tortured screaming variety. But the guitar tone is almost exactly like the one used on Godflesh's debut album Streetcleaner...and the drumming is sort of industrial metalish and mechanical, just like Godflesh, but I do believe that they use a real drummer instead of machine. I do want to point out that some songs seems to loose the Godflesh sound sometimes, but it does reappear frequently throughout the album.

Overall I'd recommend this album to anyone who likes sludge, or early Godflesh, there's enough of both elements to keep fans of either entertained without being a shameless Godflesh rip off like early Pitchshifter or Soulstorm (both of whom are also excellent, but that's for another review and another time). -taken from metal-archives.com

New Orleans' Stressball were formed in the early '90s and consisted of vocalist Steven Gaille, guitarist Lennon Laviolette, bassist Eddie Dupuy, and drummer Joseph Fazzio. Building their unusual sound from a number of heavy metal and hardcore influences, the group released a single, eponymous album in 1994 before fading into oblivion. On their perplexing 1994 self-titled debut, Southern originals Stressball manage to defy most expectations of what more heavy metal should be, or at least what it usually is: fast-paced, overwhelming, and LOUD. Instead, unnaturally subdued heavies like "Dust," "Colum," and "Empty Promises" casually contradicted these seemingly inexorable maxims with patient, slow-burning intensity. Like Pantera playing at half the volume and half the speed (double kick drums and all), Stressball cook up a mysterious gumbo of sound that combines elements culled from death metal, hardcore punk, and Southern sludge. And if comedic legend Sam Kinison had a son singing for a heavy metal band, he may well have sounded like Stressball screamer Steven Gaille. This album is unquestionably unique, and it's therefore little wonder that Crash Music eventually unearthed it for reissue in 2003. ~ Ed Rivadavia, All Music Guide
