Critters Buggin is a band every (molecular) record-store owner must hate. Where do you file a band that jumps from skronk jazz to dance beats to frenetic turntable scratching? And how do you classify tunes like these when elements of world music--tablas and congas--occasionally kick in? Well, you sit back and enjoy the ride. The Critters Buggin collective--four guys with more than enough horns, samplers, drums, effects pedals, guitars, and energy to go around--traverse the entire musical spectrum on Bumpa, from drum & bass to funk. Some cuts sound like the ROVA Saxophone Quartet gone groovy--really groovy. "Flouride" is a crazed keyboard rock romp, "I Ate Lucy" is almost straight jazz, and "Brozo the Clone" is just tame enough to be labeled as acid jazz. File under: fun. --Jason Verlinde

This is probably my favorite CB album, the first track "Fluoride" is enough to have anybody hooked.  If you enjoyed the other CB albums that I posted, you should love this one.

Ben Nichols - 2009 - The Last Pale Light in the West

The sparse, dark, and aggressive alt-country, bluegrass, and southern rock ballads of The Last Pale Light in the West are guttural poems set to knee slapping fireside guitar riffs. The 7-song CD is a short, but impressive, solo debut for Lucero lead singer Ben Nichols. It is reminiscent of Bruce Springsteen’s 1982 classic Nebraska. A stark recording, the only instruments on The Last Pale Light in the West are guitars, an accordion, a piano, and Nichol’s gruff, engaging voice.
The recording is a soft piece with grim themes. The guitars lead everything, while the pianos and accordions haunt the stories Nichols tells. All the songs are written by Nichols and based on the 1985 Cormac McCarthy novel Blood Meridian: or the Evening Redness in the West. McCarthy’s Meridian is considered by many to be a modern America classic of literature, a gritty western novel about a teenage runaway “the kid,” who joins a gang of scalp hunters who massacre Indians on the U.S.-Mexico border in the 1800s. The story is based on actual events and has been praised for it’s nightmarish beauty and magnificent language. As Nichols translates the novel into brief songs he displays his gift for crafting a story and delivering intricate emotions and settings through brief phrases.
Only one song on The Last Pale Light in the West is longer than five minutes, and the closing song is an instrumental tune. Nichols begins the album with the title song, which sets the theme for the album, telling the story of a remorseless character who is bound to go west. The second song is “The Kid” – a rolling biography of The Kid – a tune that tells of a forgotten child who meets up with the devil.
The lyrics throughout the album work in many of the characters and places from Blood Meridian, and Nichols powerfully sorrowful voice shines through crisply — thanks to engineering by Doug Easley — overtop the soft, or possibly barren and dead with a harsh blood-tinged wind blowing, musical landscape that Nichols and his two partners (Rick Steff on accordian and piano, and Todd Beene on guitar) produce.

Nichols’ minimal lyrics illustrate the bleak musical layout: “Don’t believe in Hell / But he figures somehow / Even if it’s real / It’s gonna spit him back out”; “I done some preachin’ back in Texas before the war / Now I hunt heathens ‘cause it pays better than the Lord / I ride with Demons / The Devil at my side / Be it us or the heathens, we must all pay a heavy price”; “They took my ears in Omaha / Thought me dead but I weren’t at all / Left them bleeding in the mud / Branded me for horse thievery / Between my eyes for all to see / Left them bleeding in the mud / When this world was made / Was never meant to save / Everyone in kind / And I don’t believe / God much had me / Had me much in mind”. His phrasing delivers coldness and despair with pinpoint accuracy.
The Last Pale Light in the West is a gorgeous black and white photo of a homeless man on a cold New York street. Neon lights are around the corner, but the dark alley is the only way to get there, and there is no guarantee that the neon lights will save anybody. Going down the alley is a scary prospect, but there may be no way to stop your momentum, so you sharpen your teeth and challenge the shadows to a duel.

Shrum - 1997 - Red Devils and Purple Ringers

SHRUM was created by Audie T. Pitre in 1995 when he got the idea of putting two bass players together, in order to create a brutal sound. He shared this idea with Tommy Viator and they began creating what was the beginning of SHRUM. They were undecided as to whom they would get to play the second bass position. They asked Joseph J. Fontenot (they knew from a band called Shredding Lettuce) if he would be interested in the concept of a forming a band together with two bassists, drums and vocals. Enter second bassist, Joseph. The only question now was, who could they possibly get to become the vocalist, this would complete the "total package". Audie was a member of Louisiana's most notorious metal band Acid Bath, their singer Dax Riggs was the first one considered for the vocalist position of SHRUM. Dax went to one of the band's jam sessions and worked on a song. A song that would eventually become "Tears Of A Marionette". Dax's melody was perfect for the song but his lyrics just didn't work. Dax lived very far away, from everyone else in the band so it just didn't work out, unfortunately. Scott Leger would listen in on SHRUM's jam sessions. He said that he was a vocalist, but none of the band members had ever heard him. He was asked to try out for the vocalist position in SHRUM. The first practice he came to was very rough, he was trying to mimic Dax and that was definitely not what SHRUM was looking for. "We wanted something original" says Joseph. Audie then told Scott that he should be himself and sing with emotion. With that said, entered the brutal vocal style of Scott Leger Jr. SHRUM was on the verge of playing live shows, when abruptly Audie Pitre's life was taken in an automobile accident, along with his parent's lives. Red Devils and Purple Ringers were released to raise money for Audie Layne (Audie's son). The tape sold extremely well, eventually selling out completely. SHRUM completed it's first show with Kelly Pitre (Audie's little brother) filling in on bass. It was an outdoor block party. The response, and turnout for the event was absolutely unbelievable. After all this time had passed, people were still itching to here SHRUM play live. Since that time SHRUM has played a show at Zeppelins in New Orleans La. with Goatwhore. The show went great, afterward the band gave an interview to New South Metal Magazine. The question was asked "What does the future hold for SHRUM?" the answer was, "The future is wide open." As of right now SHRUM is no longer together, but legacy of Audie, and the SHRUM crew lives on threw their music.

Ketea - 2009 - Alpha

Genre(s)
Sludge/Doom Metal
Origin
United States of America (Shreveport, Louisiana)
Current Label
Doom Dealer/The Church Within
Current line-up
Emily - Guitar, Vocals
Lonnie - Bass, Vocals, Samples
Trey - Drums

Shreveport, Louisiana is a good ways north and west of the fabled New Orleans, and likewise, Ketea offer a sound north and west of fabled Nola acts like EyeHateGod, Suplecs, Mystick Krewe of Clearlight and Crowbar. Their emphasis, both musically and vocally, is on dynamics – each of the six songs on their Doom Dealer/The Church Within debut, Alpha, features finely honed changes that come in so hard they’ll crack your sheetrock and go out so smooth they’ll caulk it back up. Good for outdoor listening, I suppose.

Tonally similar to Zoroaster’s Dog Magic and mixed so the thick, hairy (which would have to be the next step up from fuzzy, right?) guitars and bass are primary considerations when listening, the sample-laden Alpha demonstrates its creators’ thoughtfulness in a variety of ways apart from the ease of transitions. All six tracks begin with the same letter as the album title, for example, and the songs are arranged so that “A Bomb a Nation,” the longest of the bunch, comes at the end of the vinyl’s side A. These may be small touches, but they show Ketea are putting real thought into their work, they’re passionate about it, where many bands just record songs, throw them together and call it a record.

What Alpha does exceedingly well is pull the listener into it and shove them out again. The trio – guitarist/vocalist Emily, bassist/vocalist Lonnie and drummer Trey – immediately set about modal deconstruction with opener “Alchemystery,” which begins with Acid King-style (if less confident) clean vocals from Emily before smashing Lonnie’s screams into the eardrum at 6:12. The interlude following the solo at 4:29 that leads into that segment helps set the range and overall mood of the album.

The more bass-driven “Affect the Hive” is the shortest and maybe the screamiest of the songs, with high-low growls and cackles playing off each other over a punishing guitar line, and the aforementioned “A Bomb a Nation,” finds Emily’s vocals more present in the mix, better sounding for it and accompanied by some Mastodonish rhythmic screaming. Side A ends quietly and side B, like the album itself, starts with a sample in “Apochrypha.” The more droned-out riffing, Kylesa-esque simultaneous vocal attack from Emily and Lonnie, insistent drumming from Trey and accordingly careful timing in the guitar provides further evidence that Ketea’s approach is well but not overly considered. They sound like their songwriting is a priority, but also that it is unforced.

“Andromeda” is the most sample-heavy of the songs, with some screams thrown in to keep things moving. What the samples are talking about I’m not sure because they’re partially buried under the music, but there’s a bit about the Kraken, which isn’t surprising given the band’s beast-of-the-sea moniker (the Cetea were water-bound monsters in Greek mythology). Closer “Above All” may not be the longest track on Alpha, but it is imbued with a sense of totality, be it because of the title or the massiveness of the riff around which it is centered and revolving. A longer interlude with dreamy guitar noises and echoes (cut off at 3:09) underscores once again that Ketea’s strength is in being able to switch between all-out brown note doom and quieter moments. The memorable guitar line soon makes its exit into about a two-minute feedback outro.

There are times when listening to Alpha feels like being picked up and put back down, but the organic sound of the band and the decided lack of awkwardness in their switching from one to the other is enough to make them stand out among their doomed peers in today’s crowded scene. They’re worth watching to see what they do down the line, but don’t let that stop you from missing them now either. Really dug this one.

Ketea are fucking AWESOME.  I had searched all over trying to get my hands on this,  especially since Shreveport is at the very top of Louisiana, it's not like I could have just bought it from a show.  I finally found it at The Mushroom in New Orleans, and I was super excited.  These guys (and girl) are vicious!!  I had only heard two or three songs from their Myspace over a year ago and I had my mind set on getting this.  With all the elements of the NOLA sludge legends, Ketea took that sound and added their elements of progression.  It was like the cherry on the sundae, or the jelly for your moldy peanut butter sandwich.

As far as I know this is an exclusive Nola 504 and More download, I emailed Trey as soon as I returned home the record shop and asked if they minded if I put this up for all of you to hear,  and they gave me their blessing.  So with that said, I'm sure this will spread like wildfire because they are that damn good!!

Enjoy!  - swampchode

Origin- United States (West Palm Beach, Florida)
Formed in: 1995

Last known line-up:
Dan Ortega - Vocals
Kyle Bennet - Guitar
Mike Maxson - Guitar

The title of this album is right. The late 90s/early 00s aren't really what come to mind when the thrash heyday is spoken of. This means nothing, as proved by Cyst and their only album. There are more hooks on this album than in a fishing shop, and you have to be strapped down to a wall in solitary confinement to even resist the urge to headbang.

Spickle

Spickle is an all original, 4-piece instrumental band from Uptown New Orleans, Louisiana. What began as a time-killer in between another band's practices, Spickle became exactly what Gregg, Paul Kenny and Bret needed; an outlet to release pressure, a palette to be creative, a great way to kill time and another reason to keep waking up.

Here's what some people outside of New Orleans had to say:

SPICKLE "Self Titled" Review Stonerrock.com
This just whips my ass right into shape! Holy crap! (check out the MP3 of the day)...
You can probably tell I like it.
If you haven't heard Spickle before, now is a good time. They are tighter than ever and this pre-release CD is good evidence that there will always be room in StonerRock for bands of the instrumental variety:) These guys are right up there with Karma to Burn and Clearlight as far as musicianship and tightness goes.
This CD travels a lot from fast furious jazzy changes to straight ahead killer road rock with plenty of impressive guitar lead work. The whole rhythm section works like a well oiled machine and are sure to be superior in the live show category.
If you like a band that just jams and does plenty of unique math twists without confusing the listener, then this is the CD for you. It fits right in there with Karma To Burn and Clearlight, check it out for the sake of rock, even if instrumental isn't your thing, you might find this interesting enough to change your mind.
Rob Wrong

Spickle " The Right to Remain Silent" review on Cosmiclava.com
The city of New Orleans is still a good ground for exciting and unique bands. This time it's SPICKLE.
After the self-titled EP, they've banned twelve tracks on the new album, released in 2002. SPICKLE's instrumental music sends the listener to a lot of varied moods and feelings. The musicians are playing amazingly tight in everything they do, from the softer jazzy parts to the whirlwind-like explosive moments. Different dynamics are playing a big role in the music. But let me pick out a few single songs, to show the immense variety of this fascinating album. Spastic Orion" or "2-3= -fun" are more direct rock tunes with hardcore undertones and not only this time, Karma To Burn are coming to mind. But as in "Valve Cover", that starts like 6t's psych tune with a somehow beautiful strange atmosphere and turns into a heavy riff-driven explosion, KTB-like, but from the whole song structure it's very different to them.

Even the quieter moments of SPICKLE, there's still a lot of energy under the peaceful surface. A song as "Bread Puddin" is a cleaver mixture between 7t's Jazzrock and complex heaviness, while "Backbreak" or "It's a nice Day to Die" is more Blues-influenced. What makes SPICKLE so amazing for me, is their impressive and creative way of combining very different musical elements to one refreshing and energetic unit. There's Jazz, Heavy Rock, Hardcore and more, so be open-minded for the SPICKLE experience. (KK)

I'll let GG sum it up:
Always gonna fight, until the day I die
No laws or limits will stop me from the way I live my life
Don't get in my way, unless you want to die
I'm living fast and hard and I accelerate on high
I listen to no one, use who I got to use
Don't ever try and get too close, 'cause I'm a burning fuse
Everyone around me is someone I will play
I'm living out my life and I'm living day to day
Within the perimeters of this world I just don't feel real right
I'm living by the laws of a gun and a knife
My soul cannot be tamed, I'm living just to die
I'm living by myself on the outskirts of life

Here's a great Dylan album from Dylan's sessions with The Band and it ended up at No. 1 on the Billboard charts, but since then it may have gotten overlooked. It really is a beautiful album that is folky with a country tinge and once again all the songs are brilliantly written and arranged by Dylan.
