Pelican - What We All Come to Need (2009)

Ok, I confess. I'm a Pelican fanatic. They're from Chicago, I've seen them live at least 10 times, and I can't find any flaws in anything they've ever put out. That being said, this is their new full-length, and their first on Southern Lord. It also features Greg Anderson (Sunn O))) ), Aaron Turner (Isis), Ben Verellen (Harkonen, Helms Alee), and Allen Epley (The Life and Times, Shiner).

It's not the best they've ever released, but it's a fantastic album. The track 'Final Breath' even has vocals! The singing is spacey enough so that it blends pretty seemlessly with the music, so it still sounds like Pelican, even though it's not insturmental.

  1. "Glimmer" - 7:31
  2. "The Creeper" - 7:20
  3. "Ephemeral" - 5:09
  4. "Specks of Light" - 7:46
  5. "Strung Up from the Sky" – 5:12
  6. "An Inch Above Sand" – 4:14
  7. "What We All Come to Need" - 6:47
  8. "Final Breath" - 7:29
Enjoy

Church of Misery - Greetings From Jonestown (E.P. 2009)

Genre: Stoner/Traditional Doom
Lyrical Theme: Serial Killers
Origin: Japan (Shinjuku, Tokyo)
Formed In: 1995

Lineup:
Tom Sutton - Guitars
Tatsu Mikami - Bass (G.A.T.E.S., Sonic Flower (Jpn), Salem (Jpn))
Junji Narita - Drums (Sonic Flower (Jpn))

1. Jonestown Massacre (Jim Jones) 12:47
2. Der Hund Von Baskerville 2:27
3. Marmor, Stein Und Eisen Bricht 2:09
Total playing time
17:23

This is Church of Misery's newest release and the first song is a non-stop guitar jam mixed with Jim Jones clips and I'm loving it. I've always been into cults and cult leaders, so this tune really is perfect to me. The next song seems to be Sabbath's "Paranoid" with German lyrics, but the lyrics are changed to be about The Hound of the Baskervilles. Odd, indeed, but it's cool as hell. The 3rd song is also sung in German and it's another unusual but awesome track. I can't even describe it, so see for yourself.

Here's what they have to say on their Myspace page:
A massive demonic tower, whos size and geometry cannot be fathomed by mortal man and whos very existance goes against he laws of gravity and nature as it reaches out into the blackened sky past the clouds into the stratosphere, belching black smoke and sending men mad at the very thought of it existance.

Sounds good, right?

“Iskra embodies the DIY approach and attitude of underground crust/punk scene and fuses it with blast beats and other aesthetics of black metal. Their overall sound is violent and explosive; but not without a sense of melody. The band does an excellent job of taking the aggression of crust/grindcore and is able to add in catchy riffs, melodies and attention grabbing structures that make each song very enjoyable. It's a great pleasure to notice that each song contains numerous riffs and does not recreate simple and boring structures over and over again. (…) Vocals are high, raspy, shrieks that sound like they'll melt your speakers.”- taken from the review by WinterBliss, www.metal-archives.com

I've been listening to this for the past few days so I figured I'd share it with you all, this is another one that I must thank Mari for so, thanks Mari!

Profanum - Musaeum Esotericum (2001)

Genre: Dark Ambient/Classical
Origin: Poland

1. Ecce Deliquium Lunae - Atri Misanthropiae Floris 20:56
2. Ecce Axis Mundi - Ars Magna Et Ultima 17:35
Total playing time
38:30

I thought I'd finish up Profanum's discography with their final full length. This one is worth having as it finds Profanum continuing with their more romantic classical take on dark ambient. I sure wish they would put out one last full length but i really don't see that ever happening so we will just have to enjoy the 3 full lengths they have. There is also a demo "Under a Black Wings of Emperor" that I will post if anyone is interested, just let me know!

Profanum - Flowers Of Our Black Misanthropy (1996)

Genre: Black Metal/Classical
Origin: Poland

1. Tears Of Chors 7:19

3. Song Of The Mist Part I (Wolfenthirst) 2:19
4. Into The Beginning Of Eternal Wisdom 3:15

7. Unspoken Name Of God 4:38
8. Under A Black Wings Of Emperor 4:58
9. 666 5:01
Total playing time
39:28

This is Profanum's first full length and it sees them combining black metal with breathtaking classical arrangements. The guitars are still shredding on this one so it gives us the best of both worlds and makes this the "must have" Profanum release.

Profanum - Profanum Aeternum - Eminence Of Satanic Imperial Art (1997)

Genre: Dark Ambient/Classical/Black Metal
Lyrical Themes: Satanism, Misanthropy, Philosophy, Literature
Origin: Poland (Zielona Góra)

Status: Split up

Last Known Lineup:

Geryon - (Witchmaster (Pol))

1. The Descent Into Medieval Darkness 7:23
2. Conquering The Highest Of The Thrones In Universe 5:10
3. The Serpent Crown 8:02
4. Raven Singing Over My Closed Eyes 6:29
5. Journey Into The Nothingness 6:26
Total playing time
33:46

On this album, Profanum replaced the black metal guitars and bass with classical orchestra music, thus creating a dark and epic journey through the hidden recesses of your mind. Well, haha, i don't know about all that but this sure is a remarkable classic. I guess Profanum called it quits now, but the members are now concentating on their more straightforward black/thrash project "Witchmaster" who are also really good. Check this one out for sure because I know you'll love it.

Electrocution- Inside the Unreal

Origin: Italy
Release Date: 1993
Label: Rosemary's / Contempo

Lineup:

Mick Montaguti - Vocals / Guitar
Alex Guadagnoli - Guitar
Max Canali - Bass
Luca Canali - Drums

I posted this band's Remains demo yesterday, and here is the full-length that followed. Like I said, the only gripes I had about the demo was it's short length. Well, that is obviously fixed here, since this is a full-length release. Great Italian death metal in the Swedish vein, mixed with a bit of Avant-Garde sounding bits. Obscure death metal at it's finest.

Tracklisting:

1.Premature Burial03:46

Tracklist of the bonus CD:
01. Winter Mirage
02. Valley of loneness
03. Autumn Memories (Remastered)
04. Elapsing Autumn (Remastered)

Here's Zuriaake's only full length so far and in my opinion this is just a supreme masterwork. They play depressive mid to slow paced black metal with a beautiful organic atmosphere. If you liked the split with Yn Gizarm, you will completely love this.

Genre: Death Metal
Origin: Italy

Lineup:
Mick Montaguti - Vocals/Guitar
Alex Guadagnoli - Guitar
Max Canali - Bass
Luca Canali - Drums

Well, there really is no better words to describe this than as pure old school tech-death with the good Swedish sound (though these guys are from Italy). Don't be fooled by the "demo" label. This is actually very good sounding, and the only problem with this demo is that it's too short. A long-lost gem is always a good find with today's dying death metal scene.

This is a compilation of "Wisconsin" and their self titled debut, so it has almost all of their material. This band was so crazy and they completely spit in the face of the government and anyone in authority.
