Mona De Bo - Nekavējies, Šīs Ir Spēles Ar Tevi (2010)

2010 - Nekavējies, Šīs Ir Spēles Ar Tevi

Mona De Bo is a Latvian band playing a blend of slowcore, drone, and experimental rock music.

Mona De Bo was started as a guitar and drums duo by Edgars Rubenis and Edgars Eihmanis in 2005. By drawing inspiration from Deerhoof, Jeff Buckley and Sonic Youth, they took to their playing with an exploratory approach, more often going into the challenging rather than the redeeming fields of music. Roughly describable as garage-y and experimental, their early material was captured on a debut vinyl, released in 2008. It comprised 10 songs in Latvian and played mostly in duo setting.
Besides releasing their debut album, in 2008 Mona De Bo also traveled to the US to appear at the SXSW music conference, which brought them to the attention of BBC's new music scout Tom Robinson. They also worked with a theater producer Martiņš Eihe, creating an experimental and noise saturated soundtrack for his play in a drama theatre in Valmiera and playing for two seasons running at the play's performances. Touring brought Mona De Bo around the Baltic States, Russia and also Finland. Besides playing clubs they also appeared at such festivals as Jyrock (Fin), Stop The Silence (Ru), Plink Plonk (Ee) and Positivus (Lv).
In 2009, after having almost a year long break, Mona De Bo started playing again and finished the summer with it's second album "Nekavējies, Šīs Ir Spēles Ar Tevi" ("Don't Hesitate, You're Already Part Of It"). Music on the densely orchestrated (the original duo + organ, guitar, trombone, french horn, and double bass) "Nekavējies,..." clearly pays homage to the masters of doom and drone  - Earth and Sunn O))), but also involves bursts of free-jazz improv as well as melodies drenched in layers of white noise. The record was released in March 2010 to a critical acclaim both locally and internationally. It has received frequent airplay on radio stations, including the prominent Jersey City's WFMU.
The band's main desire still remains the powerful, otherworldly experience available through live performances, which have been Mona De Bo's trademark since its very beginnings.

Track Listing:

1.  Vini Aiziet Saule

3.  Speles Ar Tevi
4.  Dejosim!
5.  Vestijums
6.  Un Dienas Istums Neizdziest
7.  Lielo Koku Ena

Mona De Bo guitarist Edgars Rubenis was kind enough to send me this album, which is available online for free from their web page. I told him that I would gladly give it a couple of spins and let him know what I thought of it.  He was actually surprised when I told him that I had listened to it quite a few times.  With the Drone scene gaining more and more notoriety, I can see how many really good bands will end up being overlooked . Hopefully these guys aren't one of those bands that people let slip past them.  I really, really enjoyed this album, and have listened to it a bunch more times since I recieved it.  The atmosphere that they have created here is remarkable.   If you are into Drone or Ambient music, do yourself a favor and check these guys out.  They might be the next big thing rolling off the shelves at the Southern Lord Records warehouse.  *fingers crossed*

Nick Curran and The Nitelifes - Fixin' Your Head (1999)

Nick Curran describes his music as a cocktail consisting of the sounds of no less than seventeen widely differing musicians blended together with a cup of broken glass. That only begins to characterize the wallop packed by the 98-proof elixir of this singer, songwriter and monster guitarist who effortlessly carries the past with him as he blazes across the musical landscape in perpetual forward motion.

Nick Curran was born on Sept 30, 1977 in Biddeford, Maine, and grew up in nearby Sanford. He started playing drums when he was three, occasionally pounding the skins for his father’s rock ‘n’ roll band. However, when he received a guitar for Christmas at age nine he had found his instrument. He taught himself to play while following his father’s advice: “Listen to everything that you like and eventually you’ll find your own style within all your influences.”

Curran began accumulating his arsenal of influences early. “My mom and step-dad were listening to rock ‘n’ roll, my father listened to blues such as Freddy King, T-Bone Walker and B.B. King and my friends were into heavy metal.” Today, he cites his songwriting muses as Little Richard, Richie Valens, Chuck Berry and T-Bone Walker. The Ramones and The Misfits particularly inspire him to pen songs outside the box. He also looks to “the real raw, rough blues like Howlin’ Wolf and John Lee Hooker—guys singing about messed-up stuff and about falling apart at any second. I also like AC/DC, Hank Williams, Sr. and Gene Vincent.”

Curran began his professional career at age nineteen, leaving Maine to tour with Ronnie Dawson, “The Blonde Bomber.” Although Dawson was primarily a rockabilly musician, many blues and punk fans appreciated his performances. He taught Curran not to get pigeonholed. Curran toured next with Texas rockabilly doyenne Kim Lenz, moving to Dallas to join her backup band the Jaguars for two years, and performing on Lenz’s recording, The One And Only. Nick would stay with the Jaguars for two years. He is also featured on Lenz’s latest CD, It’s All True, and recently toured with her in the summer of 2009.

In 1999 the Texas Jamboree label issued Curran’s debut solo recording, Fixin' Your Head. As he would do on all future CDs, Curran used vintage recording equipment to achieve the feel and sound of old 45s and 78s, and the LPs of the 1950s. To support the recording he formed the band, Nick Curran and the Nitelifes, whose performances whipped audiences to frenzied devotion with their wild ride of retro, yet fresh and edgy rock ‘n’ roll, boogie, r & b, jump blues and a variety of other tasty stylistic devils in the details.

From 2004 to 2007 Curran played with The Fabulous Thunderbirds appearing on their 2005 recording, Painted On. Also during that time, Curran and bassist Ronnie James started the punk band Deguello, saying that it “sounded as if Little Richard sang with The Ramones.”

Curran performed four songs in a scene in the 2008 HBO Series "True Blood," based on The Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris, which explores the co-existence of humans and vampires.

1999 - Fixin' Your Head

A friend of mine told me to check this guy out a while back, when I finally did, it blew my mind.  This is some good stuff.  I felt like I was back in the 50's as soon as I pressed play.  I'm sure he's gained some notoriety since appearing on HBO's shitty depiction of Southern Louisiana known as "True Blood".  Even so, I'd say that this guy deserves it.  This album is definitely lots of fun to rock out to.  If any of you dig it, I have a few of his other releases as well.

Here is a collection of singles and songs that were featured on various splits from France's The Austrasian Goat.  Apparently, Austrasia was the name of a forgotten land, between France and Germany. Centuries after centuries, the people of Austrasia refused the christian influence and kept a relative independence until the 18th century. Through the ages, this land kept marks of ancient pagan rites, scares of deceases and major conflicts, and shroud of suffering, hidden behind apparent serenity. This green and gray desert attests the fall of a civilization.

This is what I would describe as what would happen if Gnaw Their Tongues, Khanate, Nortt, and (insert relentlessly heavy doom band here) all had sex.  The Austrasian Goat would be their love child.  That's probably not the best description of the music, but I'm sure you get the idea.

The Agents Of Satan formed in Redwood City, Ca. back in 1995 from the ashes of a band called Radioactive Lunch and are still in existence today in one form or another. I'm lucky enough to have witnessed the live brutality brought forth by the A.O.S many times and they always delivered the goods. Here are a few names in the West Bay Coalition family of bands that A.O.S members are in and have been in Deadbodies Everywhere, Plutocracy, Go Like This!, Altamira, Funeral Shock and Apeshit. Not much info here but you can check out some of the previous mentioned bands. Comments are greatly accepted!!

Hot Graves - D Beat Death Dirge (Demo 2008)

The title of this filthy little offering pretty much says it all. Just punishing shit here. Plus they're from Fl. so I'm all over it...

"At this point of my uber-metal-nerd’s existence, it’s a rare event to encounter a band that I haven’t at the very least heard about before (at least on the East Coast) so I was more than a little curious when I strolled into this year’s Heart of Winter Fest in Richmond, VA and bellied up to the stage just in time to catch the second band. My first impression of Hot Graves was “Crusty, thrashy, blackened d-beat with a sassy Southern boy on the mic? Cool.” Five minutes into their set, it was looking more like Armageddon. Cranked-out bestial warlust and gleeful blasphemy were the order of the evening, as frontman Myk spewed raspy Satanic screeds over Nunslaughtering riffs and plenty of toxic sludge and bassist Hutch spent most of his time threatening to propel himself off the monitors onto a crowd of the unwashed.

Hot Graves swear allegiance to like-minded blasphemers in Archgoat, Discharge, Revenge, Hellhammer and Wolfbrigade with their genre-smashing amalgamation of black metal, thrash, crust punk, war metal and heavier-than-hell slabs of primitive death metal (think Necros Christos). Throw in the odd sizzling guitar solo, a quartet of Southern drawls sweet as Waffle House sizzurp, sick Anti-Cimex & Discharge covers and a tongue-in-cheek, fuck-you attitude, and you’ve got yourself one hell of a good time. Wonderfully raw, unabashedly old-school, and undeniably awesome, Hot Graves’ d-beat death dirges are essential listening for those of you that like it nasty. Are they reinventing the wheel? Hell no, but you can bet they’re throwing some pimped-out spiked rims on that bitch!" ~ Metalinjection.net

2. Raining Puke

Here's a great band I was obsessed with when I was younger, and this album is bringing back a lot of memories. This one is more punk then ska but they do have their share of the ska breakdowns which are pretty cool. I have a couple more albums and splits I can rip if anyone is interested, but I regrettably no longer have "Destroy What Destroys You" or "All Fall Down" which I really want and I have no idea what happened to my copies so If anyone has those, let me know.

Gruesome Stuff Relish - Horror Rises From The Tomb (2008)

I love these guys. Awesome goregrind/death/thrash with thick ass grooves...

"Six long years it took Gruesome Stuff Relish to release a second full length album. A huge fan of their debut, Teenage Giallo Grind, I was particularly disappointed when I heard of them disappearing from the scene and later dying in some undisclosed spot. Not even horror master Billy could trace their bodies; he even checked the morgue but they had not been there. Earlier this year, however, someone performed an occult ritual involving the sacrifice of a naked boobilicious woman. Lightning had reportedly cracked up the dark Spanish sky as though a stone had been hurled at it by someone, an irate witch doctor perhaps, and up rose Gruesome Stuff Relish….from their tomb.

The screams of people that you hear in the intro of the album opener “Triumph of the Dead” could be of shock and horror looking at their walking corpses, but to their devout candle-lighting fans, they are the screams of unbridled joy and excitement. Gruesome Stuff Relish are back and they have a newfound bounce in their steps, almost as if they too are extremely happy to be back. Through the next 19 songs (plus two tracks as a Diwali bonus from No Escape records who have taken the onus of reissuing this Razorback title that was released in the same year) they revel unabashedly in their familiar highly adorable style. Something, however, has changed albeit not too drastically, and whether it is for the better or worse is a moot question. For almost as if to conform to the Razorback records template, their grinding nastiness is toned down in favour of catchy beats and groove fun partly inspired by Impetigo, which is just as well. The music now bears a close resemblance to the Haemorrhage classic, Grume, what with its Carcass-influenced splattergore music having a similar kind of Spanish jungle-groove vibe to it. The GSR cannibals on this album are not as ravenous as they used to be, and while they will devour you all the same, there will be much tribal dancing and groovy grind'n'roll festivities this time around.

From the onset their emphasis on groove and catchiness on this album will be made apparent; the music has been slowed to a mid-pace for the most part, making them prominent. They sometimes even pause in between the songs as if to wait for your mandatory nod of approval. The GSR vocalists still emulate Jeff Walker and his wide array of vocals, and though the execution seems more collected here, they possess adequate phlegm-ridden causticity. The sound, while still buzzing, is smoother comparatively and much more cohesive. The death metal influences have been nicely blended into the music. Some of their songs here are adventurous as well. Clearly they want you to have fun, and it's very hard not to. At any given point of time you will find yourself banging your head, tapping your foot or waving your penis to their music. In comparison the beloved GSR leads are sparingly used but most of them still sound like a complaining whine from a small girl whose pigtails are being pulled. The songs are too many to merit individual analysis and they all consistently deliver splashy gore fun. When blasted in the right mood, you will cling onto your speaker like a tenacious snail, and in the event of your body being forcibly pulled away from it by a family member before the album comes to its natural end, you will die if you have to sticking to it like that.

Fun comes guaranteed with every Gruesome Stuff Relish release and depending on your idea of it you will prefer either their debut or this one. I prefer Teenage Giallo Grind as it gives me the feeling of being eaten alive by angry piranhas, but this one's catchier and groovier, more accessible basically, and almost as good enough. So, though not as intense or unhinged as their first one, Horror Rises from the Tomb is still one of the most enjoyable releases of this year. Get off your ass that's been itching for fun and buy this now!" ~ DCWebzine.com

This Comp Kills Fascists - Vol. 1 (2008)

Here's a really cool compilation that's the perfect soundtrack for whenever you just have to break some shit. The Agents Of Satan tracks are just sick!! Actually, the whole comp is sick. "Joe Ryder" has to be one of the coolest new songs (to me, anyway) I've heard in a while. Good listening...

"Conceived and collected by Scott Hull (PIG DESTROYER, AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED) in the tradition of the legendary Cry Now, Cry Later compilations of the 90's, 'This Comp Kills Fascists' brings together over 50 tracks of the very best of today's underground grindcore, hardcore, and power violence bands. 'This Comp Kills Fascists' features new and exclusive material from INSECT WARFARE, MAGRUDERGRIND, KILL THE CLIENT, and more, as well as the first new material in almost ten years from AGENTS OF SATAN and legendary grinders BRUTAL TRUTH. This is seriously a must for you and the late great Wesley Willis is heard introducing the band. AMAZING stuff.

I've actually wanted to hear this album for a long time and I've heard good things about it, but I forgot for awhile and now I'm finally getting the chance. I have only heard the title track so far, but it's AWESOME. It's so much fun to act like a superhero too. I'm sure this is good so turn it up and check it out with me. It's really a can't miss since everything I have ever heard by Shonen Knife has been fun as hell adorable heartwarming goofy pop punk.

Scald - Fluke (2007)

"Limited Edition pressing of this 2008 CD EP from the Irish Metal band. Since forming almost 15 years ago from the remains of Irish crust bands TVP and Bleeding Rectum, Belfast's Scald have garnered a reputation for shunning the usual conventions to create original music that's as enigmatic as it is visceral. Fluke is a vicious indictment of the global Catholic Church and it's secretive history of greed and manipulation. Five tracks of blackened, grinding Metal performed at breakneck pace provide a platform for a scathing attack, spat and screamed forth in Scald's inimitable and immediately identifiable style. The EP finishes with a 25 minute; sprawling ambient noise composition that uses captured and processed audio from the Fluke session and an Italian spoken-word monologue. The album has a running time of 40 minutes" ~ Cduniverse

  2. Act 2 - Cocoon
  3. Act 3 - Lumbricoid

Evil Motherfucker

Heres more Joe Buck Yourself to add to Swampchodes post here . Joe Buck is as down to earth as you can get, period. I picked these disc's up at the live shows, as he tours relentlessly from coast to coast in his RV with his lady and his dawg. The evil one has inked a deal with Century Media records and will have a new release out in the near future so look out for it! He was once a member of Th' Legendary Shack Shakers and Hank III's Damn Band. The Damn Band seem a little flat these days and lacking energy since Joe Buck departed. All three disc's that I purchased were hand drawn by the evil one himself as we sat chatted. The covers were hand drawn too but were already made up and ready to stuff. You can get more info and tour dates by going here

Metal Mixtape Madness again!!!!!!!!!!

I put together another compilation for my friends over at the Sludge Swamp, so I figured I'd post it up here too for any of you that may have missed it over there. I was celebrating 420 and forgot to include cover art so Cheeto hooked it up with a skanky pirate lady.

"I was up until 4-21 trying to put this one together, extremely tired and stoned, hopefully it goes together well. This compilation features many bands from New Orleans that I'm sure most of you know or have at least heard of, but I also tried to include bands from this area that are not so well known, as well as some of the newer acts. Hope you guys enjoy! Be on the lookout for upcoming posts at Nola 504 from some of the bands featured on this mix such as Mars, High Priest, and everybody's favorite "genital rockers", The Poots."

1. Felt Nothing - Soilent Green
2. Mons Sermo Incendia - Haarp
3. Tombs Concealed - High Priest
4. Why Live - Mangina

I got into this album because I'm a big fan of the black metal band "Black Funeral" created by Michael Ford and of course I looked into his other projects. This is a kick ass dark and evil trance inducing ritual electronic album which is great when you are in the mood for raving. Awesome album, check it out!
